Gordon Brooks Dotts' Obituary
Gordon Brooks Dotts, 84, of Chariton, passed away Thursday, October 8, 2015 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Gordon was born on February 9, 1931 to Lester & Elizabeth (Brooks) Dotts in Wright Township in Wayne County, Iowa. Gordon attended Palestine country school through the eighth grade and attended Corydon High School graduating in 1949. While in high school Gordon played football and ran track. In 1951 he was drafted into the Army, was sent to Camp Funston in Ft. Riley Kansas for training as Infantry and Artillery Field Wireman. In May of 1952 Gordon was sent to Korea, he joined an artillery unit as a Field Wireman keeping communication open from firing batteries to foreward observers. He left Korea on July 27, 1953 the day the cease fire was signed. After coming home Gordon farmed for a year and then went to work in Des Moines for Northland Dairy. On September 25, 1955, Gordon was united in marriage to Ann Boyce, which in his own words "was the best thing he ever did". To this union were four children: Dave, Don, Linda, and Janet. When Northland closed he went to work for General Mills and in 1963 they moved to a farm near Milo. He continued to work full time and with the help of his wife Ann they raised sheep, cattle and hogs and in 1967 he was named Master Lamb Producer. They later moved to Wayne County where they would then start raising Red Angus Cattle along with their sheep and hogs. He was a skilled herdsman and artificially inseminated cattle all over the area. They worked the farm together and enjoyed raising the cattle and improving the land. They moved to their current home in 2007 and enjoyed getting to know and becoming great friends with their Amish neighbors. His greatest love was his family, and he had a special connection with his great grandchildren. Family describes him as a very sharp man who never forgot anything.
