Gloria J. Cortesio's Obituary
Gloria J. Cortesio, age 83, of Centerville, Iowa, died Monday, October 31, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville. She was born the daughter of Frank, Sr. and Angelina (Bevacqua) Cortesio on October 31, 1922 in Mystic, Iowa. She graduated from the Mystic Community Schools in 1941.Shortly after high school, Gloria began a career that would span over 40 years in the Appanoose County Clerk of District Court's office, first as a Deputy Clerk. In 1960, she was elected Clerk of the District Court and re-elected to five more terms, the longest serving elected Clerk of Court in Appanoose County history serving until her retirement in 1984. She is remembered as a well-known and conscientious public servant who gave long and faithful service to the Iowa District Court for Appanoose County.After retirement, she devoted her life to caring for and serving the needs of two of her brothers until their deaths. For the past several years, she was a resident family member of the Long Term Care unit at Mercy Medical Center, where she enjoyed the care and friendship of the staff and other residents. She was a faithful and active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and sang in the choir for many years. She was also a lifelong member of the Republican Party and was the first inductee into the Appanoose County Republican Hall of Fame in 1985.Gloria was preceded in death by: her parents; brothers, John, George, Sandy and Frank Cortesio, Jr.; sisters, Ruth and Tressie Cortesio.Survivors are her: nephew, John Cortesio and his wife, Barbara of Des Moines, Iowa; niece, Ann Young and her husband, Jeff of Centerville, Iowa; great-nieces and nephews, Maria Osorio and Angela Harrington of Parkland, FL, Susanna Ogata of Wakefield, MA, Michael Cortesio of Downers Grove, IL, Tyler Young of Chicago, IL and Nick Young of Centerville, IA.Mass of Resurrection will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2005 at 11:30 am at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Centerville, Iowa with Fr. Ron Will, CPPS officiating. Burial will follow at the Elgin Cemetery in Mystic, Iowa. Public visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 from 1pm till 8 pm at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville with the family present from 6 pm till 8 pm at the funeral home and a prayer service will be held at 7:30 pm at the funeral home.Memorials can be given to St. Mary's Catholic Church and may be left at or mailed to the To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Gloria J.
