Gloria Mae August's Obituary
Gloria August, 90 of Corydon, passed away on Sunday, December 5, 2021 at Corydon Specialty Care in Corydon, Iowa.
Gloria Mae Dixon was born to Oscar Lawrence and Sadie Mae (Powers) Dixon on May 28, 1931 in Hopewell, Virginia, and was one of six children. Gloria had four brothers, James, Oscar, William, and Michael, and a sister, Jeanne, who passed away at birth. She spent her childhood living in Hopewell before her family moved to Newport News, Virginia in 1940, where she graduated in 1948 from Warwick High School. Gloria would go on to live in Chicago, Illinois from 1955 until 2004 before settling down Corydon, Iowa.
Throughout her life, Gloria held many jobs in the administrative field, including civilian clerk at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia, as well as various retail cashiering positions. Gloria had an adventurous spirit. She loved traveling from coast-to-coast and going on ship cruises. Gloria enjoyed listening to music of any kind, but especially country and Oldies Rock 'N' Roll, attending many live concerts. Ballroom dancing was one of her hobbies as well as dancing the Jitterbug, square dancing, and clogging. Gloria was a bit of a "shopaholic." She was an avid reader, and loved diving into a good biography, autobiography, or romance novel. Gloria was involved in her church, Christ Community United Methodist Parish, where she was active on various committees. She also volunteered at the hospital, helping where she could.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters Pamela J. Arthur and Karen M. Orna (Kirk); granddaughter Amy R. Orna and grandson Robert W. Orna (Emily); great-granddaughters Renee E. Pedersen, Madison D. Pedersen, Bella F. Orna, great-grandson Evan C. Orna and great-granddaughter Brooklynn M. Orna; brothers James L. Dixon (Margaret) and Michael S. Dixon (Kathy), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and other extended family. Gloria is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Oscar H. Dixon and William W. Dixon, and infant sister Jeanne M. Dixon.
