Garold W. 'Jerry' Thomas, 87 of Des Moines passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at the Carlisle Care Center in Carlisle, Iowa Garold was born in Cincinnati, Iowa on July 16, 1922 to David & Mary (Hougland) Thomas. He received his education from the Rural Eagle Country School near Cincinnati. Garold sold cars in Southern Iowa and the Des Moines area for over 40 years. He was well known and respected by his employers, co-workers and regular customers. Upon his retirement, he attended seminary school in Springfield, Missouri and would become an ordained minister. He spent the later years of his life as a minister and evangelist. Garold enjoyed listening to and playing country music with friends and family. There wasn't an instrument he couldn't play. He also enjoyed working as a car salesman, socializing with friends and ministerial work. Garold is survived by his wife Dorothy of Altoona, three children, Garold Thomas(Linda) of Guthrie Center, Deloris Beck(Tom) of Centerville, Ron Thomas(Roxanne) of Centerville, 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, a sister Reva Ballard of Centerville and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Wilma Wright in 1971, a second wife Juanita Phelps in 1978, 11 brothers and sisters; Oney Thomas, Earl Thomas, Rosa Vestal, Lillian Crouch, Stella Stoner, Otis Thomas, Lora Terry, Henry Thomas, a twin brother Harold 'Red' Thomas, Ruth Worley and Ethyel Clark. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 12, 2009 at Thomas Funeral Home. Visitation will be Sunday from 12-8 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Cincinnati. A memorial has been established and may be sent to Thomas Funeral Home -- 23548 Hwy 5 -- PO Box 125 -- Centerville, Iowa 52544.
