Gail F. Bailey's Obituary
Gail F. Bailey, age 90, of Centerville, Iowa, died Saturday, January 10, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville. He was born the son of Frank and Eva (Halfhill) Bailey on April 30, 1918 near Allerton, Iowa. He graduated from the Millerton Community High School at Millerton, Iowa in 1938.In April of 1941, Gail entered the United States Army at Camp Claiborne in Louisiana to serve during WWII, was captured in by the German Army in North Africa and spent 2 years and 3 months as a POW. Later, in 1945, was honorably discharged. He farmed in the Cincinnati, Iowa area all his life. On November 4, 1950, Gail was united in marriage to Carol LaVanway in Rockford, Illinois. He was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Centerville, Iowa and the American Legion Post #407 in Unionville, Iowa. He loved to fish, play bingo and cribbage, plant and canning vegetables and spending time with his family and friends.He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife, Carol Bailey on June 28, 2000; brothers, Glenn Bailey (who was his twin) and Merle Bailey.Gail is survived by his: step-son, Gene and his wife, Nancy Fretheim of Saugus, California; brother, Doyle Bailey of Centerville, Iowa; sisters, Aileen Bevan of Loves Park, Illinois and Lucille Thatcher of Corydon, Iowa; grandchildren, Sean Fretheim of Kirksville, Missouri, and Amber, Glenn and Amanda Fretheim all of California; as well as many nieces, nephews and his very close friends, Carl and FloraJo Martin of Centerville, Iowa.Funeral services will be held at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 with Pastors Kathryn Franzenburg and Dr. Gary Kinkel officiating. Burial will follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Cincinnati, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 from 1 pm till 8 pm at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville with the family present from 6 pm till 8 pm.Memorials can be made to either the First Evangelical Lutheran Church or Mercy Hospice and can be left at the funeral home.
