Fred Torrey's Obituary
Fred H. Torrey, age 80 of Unionville, Missouri passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at the Putnam County Care Center in Unionville, Missouri. He had been there for one week, but failing health for the past two years.
Fred was born on January 2, 1941, the son of John Stilman Torrey and Marge (Hunter) Torrey in Putnam County, Missouri, where he spent all his life except for the time he spent in the Army. He graduated from Unionville High School with the Class of 1959. Shortly after, he enlisted into the United States Army, serving his country faithfully, and was honorably discharged in 1962. He was united in marriage to Leta (Potter) Burkland on December 18, 1964. To this union, two children were born, Melody and Melissa.
Fred was a life long member of the VFW, the American Legion, and the First Baptist Church of Unionville. He was very talented in wood working, and even sent some of his furniture as far away as Alaska. He loved showing his chickens for 38 years at the Missouri State Fair, and over 40 years at the Putnam County Fair. Fred also enjoyed his greenhouse and taking his vegetables to the Farmers Market for 36 years. He took pride in anything he did.
Fred loved to travel. He and Leta spent their 35th Anniversary in Hawaii. He enjoyed traveling to Florida, Colorado, and places in Missouri.
Left to honor Freds memory are his wife, Leta Torrey of Unionville; his children, Melody Torrey of Unionville, Melissa (Steve) Nemmers of Olathe, Kansas; children, Paul Burkland of Kirksville, Missouri and Melinda (David) Kottman of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, who he raised as his own after his marriage to Leta; a sister, Alvera (Jim) Gibson; a brother, Bert (Rogene) Torrey; grandchildren, Jeremy (Brooke) Kottman of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Courtney Kottman of Boston, Massachusetts; Brenda Nemmers and friend, Levi LaMay of Wellsville, Kansas, Stephanie (J.D.) Moore of Shawnee, Kansas; great grandchildren, Charlee Nemmers, Peyton LaMay, Carson Moore, and Lillian Kottman of Wisconsin; his aunt, Virginia Torrey; and cousins, Danny Yowell, Susan Berry, Sam Torrey, Paul Few, Joyce Tush, and Mae Turmine.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marge Torrey; in laws, Simp and Clell Potter; a brother, Alva; two sisters in law, Ruby (Vernon) Johnson and Edna (Vern) Stottlemyre; four aunts; one uncle; and two cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00PM, Friday, January 29, 2021 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Pastor Walter Griffen officiating. Visitation will take place prior to the service, Friday, January 29, 2021, at Lange Funeral Home in Centerville, with the family present from 12:00PM-1:00PM. Military rites will follow the funeral service at Lange Funeral Home. Fred will be cremated following the service. Memorials have been established to either the Unionville Cemetery, Unionville, Missouri or to the Torrey Cemetery and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, C/O Torrey family, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.
