Everette N. Hornaday's Obituary
Everette Hornaday, age 87 of Centerville, IA, formerly of Numa, Iowa died Saturday morning, November 8, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center, Centerville.
He was born August 31, 1921 at Unionville, IA the son of Everett and Maude (Sharpneck) Hornaday. He was raised in Eddyville, Iowa where he graduated from high school in 1941 and served in the Navy Seabees in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. He built the airstrip on Iwo Jima and watched the US flag being raised. He married Hazel Hayes February 15, 1947 at the First Baptist Church in Centerville by Pastor Luther Childs. They were married at 4 PM and left the wedding to go to the farm where Everett needed to milk his cows and Hazel fried him a hamburger- that was their honeymoon. They farmed near Seymour first and later near Centerville, he was also a carpenter. From 1971 until 1980 he operated the Clark Station on the corner of Hwy's 2 & 5 in Centerville. He and Hazel loved to square dance, in fact they had met a dance. He was a member of the Seymour American Legion and Grace Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Everette is survived by His wife of 61 years, Hazel, 5 sons Gene Hornaday and his wife Janette of Pollock, MO, David Hornaday and his wife Carol of rural Mystic, Paul Hornaday and his wife Debbie of Bloomfield, Mark Hornaday and his wife (Karen) of Knoxville, Charlie Hornaday and his wife Chanda of Oologah, OK; 13 grandchildren Larry (Kristi) Hornaday of Unionville, MO, Matt (Whitney) Hornaday of Jerome, Iowa, Jeff (Shelly) Hornaday of Seymour, Iowa, Jason Hornaday and special friend Ashley Seuss of Dixon, Iowa, SPC Broc Hornaday of Ft. Benning, GA, Jake Hornaday of Oologah, OK, Laurie (Mike) Grassley of Cameron, MO, Tara (Tom) Micetich of Centerville, Kim (Kevin) Orman of Ottumwa, Iowa, Missy Johnson of Centerville, Tyann Hornaday of Oologah, OK, Amanda Hornaday and her fiance Brian Grafft of Tiffin, Iowa and Tashina Hornaday of Knoxville; 15 great grand children, 1 great great grandchild, a brother Milford (Freda) Hornaday of Udell, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by a grandson Jared Hornaday, parents and a sister Lois Mason.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 Tuesday afternoon, November 11, 2008 at the Lange Funeral Home, Centerville with Pastors Brian Hargrave and Robert Pick officiating. Friends may call all day Monday with the family present from 6-8 Pm at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Hanes Cemetery with Military Rites.
