Evelyn Louise Bennett's Obituary
Evelyn Louise (Goben) Bennett was born on March 23rd, 1934, in rural Lucas County Iowa. Evelyn passed peacefully at Story Medical Senior Care facility on April 3rd, 2024. She was the fifth of seven children born to the late Walter and Mary (Grove) Goben. Evelyn graduated from Cambria High School in 1952.
Shortly after graduation, Evelyn was united in marriage to Carl Laverne Bennett at the Mt. Ayr Church of Christ on June 2, 1952. After their marriage, the couple moved to Charleston, South Carolina where Carl served in the United States Navy, Evelyn started her first job as a bank teller and they welcomed their first son, Daniel. The couple returned to Iowa in 1955, bought a farm north of Promise City, and extended their family to include David, Duane, Donald, Carla and Daryl. While raising six children, Evelyn gardened, drove a tractor, cooked numerous meals, kept up with the never ending laundry and the books for the farm. Amazingly, she did all these things while ensuring the kids were all dressed and ready for church nearly on time three times a week.
Being a wife, mother and grandmother was her life, Evelyn possessed the kind of tenacity and grace required to do all of those things very well. Evelyn was able to mend a hurting heart or torn coveralls in equal measure. She was a strong woman with a strong faith in Christ and raised her children to have strong values.
Carl and Evelyn loved nothing more than a house full of family. Evelyn was wonderful cook so nobody would leave hungry. She made the best beef and noodles, and her homemade bread, cinnamon rolls and pies were also family favorites. There may have even been a family fight or two over her coconut cream pie. Evelyn enjoyed helping her kids with 4-H projects, supporting their school activities and later in life following her grandkids and great grandkids.
After the last child was nearly raised, she began work as a Homemaker Health Aid in Wayne County. This career would span over a decade, and it became something she dearly loved. Carl and Evelyn retired after 40 years of farming and moved to Corydon in 1995. In 2017, Carl and Evelyn were blessed to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary. Evelyn enjoyed her last 5 years in Homestead of Centerville where she was cared for greatly.
