Eugene 'Gene' William Ruby's Obituary
Eugene 'Gene' William Ruby, age 83 of Mystic, Iowa passed away Friday, December 16, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Gene was born on November 27, 1933 in Numa, Iowa, the son of Mettie William and Ocie Margarete (Thackery) Ruby. He graduated from Numa High School in 1952. On October 19, 1952, Gene was united in marriage to Connie Jean Brown in Numa and from this union of marriage, three children were born, Steve, Ronda, and Brenda.
After high school, Gene began working at Alcoa. In 1953 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. Gene served his country faithfully and was honorably discharged in 1955.
Following his military service, he continued working at Alcoa into the mid 1960s. Gene then worked for a brief period of time at the Sinclair Station in Cincinnati. Subsequently, he accepted a position of employment with the Centerville Body Shop, a position he maintained for the next fourteen years. Gene then became self employed for a period of five years when he owned and operated a frame shop in Mystic. In his final fifteen years of employment, Gene drove a school bus for the Centerville School District.
As a resident of Mystic, Gene was extremely active in the community. He started the Boy Scouts organization in Mystic in 1964. Gene was also a past member of numerous groups, including the Mystic City Council, the Mystic Fire Department, and the Mystic American Legion, Post # 340. He was also a past mayor of mystic, as well as he protected the Mystic community as city marshal for five years.
Gene was an active member of the Dale Church for many years.
Gene possessed numerous hobbies and joys in life, including deer hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, meat butchering, attending auctions, cooking, watching western reruns on the television, bead work, going to church, sitting on the porch with his dog Carmel, and accumulating numerous 'collectibles' throughout his lifetime. Most importantly, Gene enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of sixty four years, Connie Jean Ruby of Mystic; three children, Steve (Nancy) Ruby of Centerville, Ronda Ruby Sturms of Centerville, and Brenda Ruby Sowells of Centerville; a sister, Shirley Marie Nyquist of Milan, Illinois; five grandchildren, Mitch (Michelle) Cairns, Amy Ruby (Rod) Joiner, Brandon (Jacqui) Sturms, Nicole Sturms Stickler (Marty Muir), and Allison Sturms (Scott Hancox); seven great grandchildren, Michalyn Ruby, Brody Sharp, Alyssa Boehning, Jacob Cairns, Gradey Stickler, Max Muir, and Sam Muir; In-laws, Pat Sedgwick, Reta (Don) Havard, and Robert (Marie) Brown; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Ross Brown Sr; mother-in-law, Vera Brown; four siblings, Sharlene Ruby Jones, Harold Ruby, Arthur Ruby, and Donnie Ruby; nine in-laws, Carl Jones, Dan Nyquist, Billy Brown, Ross Brown Jr, Arliss Brown, Luetta Peel, John Peel, Denis Pfannebecker, and Larry Sedgwick; a son-in-law, Richard Sowells; and three nephews, Dallas Murphy, Clyde Peel, and Carl Peel.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM, Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Pastor Gerald Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in the Numa Cemetery, Numa. A visitation will take place on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 from 11 AM- 1 PM.
