Lee and Amber I only had the pleasure of meeting your grandma a couple of times. One shortly after a terrible fall.. Prayed for her then! At a very special anniversary in Numa. She made me feel very welcome. Some people you never forget for kind acts like that. I was able to read a few of her writings. It sounds like many others thought of her as very special. Have known Ethel since 1979 when she worked for job service. she took tons of pix of McCaine, Damon and Alana and we still have them displayed everywhere in our homes. She was our accountant for many years and always our trusted and loyal friend. So enjoyed the tri-yearly trips to the nursing home in the last couple of years. Her words were scattered somewhat but assured her I understood everything she meant to say and I did. She was still sharp but had difficulty expressing herself. Her love and hugs were plentiful. When we lost McCaine in 2005, she was right there with her pen in hand. I still have her many articles. She is now with Romie, the luv of her life. They were so cute together and so in love. You are already missed but the memories are a treasure. Keep us in your prayers Ethel. See you in the next life. Ethel was one of the first people I met when I began working for the Iowegian. She was always cheerful and eager for friendly conversation and she brightened the newsroom with her visits. There wasn't much going on that she missed and her column in the paper was very popular. My mother was at the nursing home when Ethel began living there, and we spent some nice times together. Ethel was such a positive and protective friend and room mate to my mother, Geneva Risher, while at Centerville Nursing & Rehab., until her passing in January of 2010. My brother and I were really pleased when the opening became available and they could be room mates. I remember like yesterday when mom passed and how hurt and compassionet Ethel was at that time. She was a wonderful person and the Centerville region was a better place due to her positve influences.She will be missed, May she Rest in Peace.Ron and Lonnie Risher and families. Numa lost one of the greatest residents. She was always so proud of Numa. When she was writing for the Iowegion she always wanted to highlight any of those that lived there or grew up there that was doing good things in their life. She did my taxes one year when I was first married and then said I'm gonna teach you do do these yourself and if you ever have any trouble, just call. I am glad,I got to visit with Ethel in the nursing home before she passed, she was so colorful in life, her writing abilities touch thousands, I am sure. I remember as a kid going to the farm and seeing the cows and fishing down by the pond catching bull frogs and snakes with my brother, my Collie Katy would bark when we pulled fish in, or got to close to the edge of the water. We would swim at the swimming pound and jump off the diving board. I remember helping Ethel pick up chicken heads one day after she rung there necks. She always tell me to get a cold pop out of the refrigerator in the garauge. I will always remember her and will forever miss her. Iowa just lost a golden treasure. Ethel will always be dear to my heart. I have such wonderful memories of going to her and Ronnie's farm with my parents and brothers for long adventureous weekends. I experienced many things that I would have never experienced if I had not gone to spend summer weekends with them. One of my fondest memories was looking at picture albums with Ethel and we would stay up late at night and she would tell lots of stories. Ethel really made am impression in my childhood years to surround yourself with family and always stay close. I have taken that lesson into my family and it has been a blessing! What an honor to have known her and even more to know her as family. Many people will miss her. I know my Dad will, they were as close as brother and sister.
