Ernest "Oliver" Houston's Obituary
Ernest "Oliver" Houston, 86, of Corydon, passed away on January 10, 2020 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Oliver was born on September 21, 1933 in Willow Springs, Missouri to John and Evelyn (Barger) Houston. He was the third child born out of twelve. After the family moved to Iowa to farm, Oliver graduated from Washington Township High School. He then enrolled in the United States Army where he served in the Korean War. Upon discharge, he married Shirley Ballentine in Montezuma, Iowa and to this union, four children were born. Oliver was a hard worker. He worked endless hours on the family farm. He enjoyed remodeling houses, watching sports, doing carpentry work and spending time with his family; especially with his grandkids and great grandkids. Oliver is survived by his daughters: Deanne Heaton, Leanne (Mike) Blizek and Shelly (David) McElvain; grandchildren: Beau (Stephanie) Heaton, Cassie Heaton, Chad (Ashley) Holmes, Matthew Blizek, Mason (Mindi) Blizek, Corina Adams, Brady (Markie) McElvain, Savannah (Bracken) Smith, Samantha (Brian) Grove, and Stephanie (Tyler) Eason; 14 great grandchildren, eight siblings, friend and caretaker, Susie Dumke as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley; son, Rusty Houston, grandson Chase McElvain, and three sisters. A Celebration of Life open house will be held from 3-6:00 p.m. on Monday, January 20, 2020 at the Promise City Community Center. Private interment will take place at the Indianola IOOF Cemetery. Memorials may be made to "Shirley's Kids" c/o Shelley McElvain. Shirley's Kids is a foundation to assist with children's needs.
