I meant Enos and Fonda at the church my Dad was a pastor at in Promise City,Ia.They were a lovely couple and later helped with my wedding on Dec.1st of 2000.They did a great job videos and the works plus it had snowed 7 inches by 700 that evening.They were very special and loving people.I also was impressed when I seen Enos had carved a mushroom out of wood I still have the newspaper clipping with his picture.I am very sad for his family.He went to a grand place i'm sure!!! A death has occurred and everything is changed by this event. We are painfully aware that life can never be the same again, that yesterday if over, that relationships once rich have ended. But there is another way to look upon this truth. If life went on the same without the presence of the one who died, we could only conclude that the life we remember made no contribution, filled no space, meant nothing. The fact that Uncle Enos left behind a place that cannot be filled is a high tribute to him. Life can be the same after a trinket has been lost, But never after the loss of a treasure. You taught us so much about the Journey of Life. We will miss our chats. Only good memories will remain in our hearts forever, you will be missed but never forgotten. One day while visiting, Enos was talking about making pie for some reason that I don't remember. He said that before you put the top crust on, you should moisten the edge of the bottom crust with the juices of the filling. That will keep your two pieces of crust from breaking apart when you cut it. I had never heard that before, so the next time I made a pie, I tried it. It worked! Every single time I have made a pie since (at least a couple times a month), I have thought of Enos and smiled. It is funny the things you remember about a person. When I was younger he was a very important part of the family. He was there when I graduated from High School, making sure I was looking my best and helped me with my tie and setting the rules after commencement. When he would visit we would get out the shot guns shoot a few rounds of trap at my Dads farm. One October day he came to visit and the question on butchering came up, it was the most beautiful day, that day I will keep in my heart forever. The stories that he would tell would capture any young man wanting to experience the things that he went through but leaving the stories with a laugh and a smile. The last time that I saw him was 2 years ago after going to the Pella tulip festival. It had been years since a visit. He still showed that American true grit, with laughter and a story. My Great Uncle Enos, was such a fun guy, always had a joke or a story. A few years ago he and Fonda spent a few days with us at our home. It was a beautiful day, and I asked him if he'd like to go for a walk, he said, no, I walked clear across France, and that's all the walking I want to do. Later seeing his purple heart on the wall and many momenotos, I knew part of his personal story. We had so many fun times over the years, playing cards, the Fountains all loved to play cards, I still teach one of those card games that I learned from Enos and his brothers, Bob, and Clifford to our friends and family.
