Eloise Campbell's Obituary
Eloise Irene Corey McAfee Shaffer Phillips Campbell, 106, of Centerville, died Friday, November 13, 2020 at Golden Age Manor, a facility she established in 1957. Born October 25, 1914, at her grandparent's home in Wayland, Iowa to John and Maxie (Martin) Corey. The family lived on a farm north of Mt. Union, Iowa until 1916 when they moved to a farm north of Morning Sun, where she was raised and educated, graduating in 1932. In August 1932 she married Mathew McAfee at Monmouth, Illinois and they set up farming near Wapello, Iowa. Later they moved to the farm where she was raised. While living there, Mathew got Transversmylitis and had to give up farming. They then moved into the town of Morning Sun. They were later divorced. To support the family, Eloise went into the chicken hatchery business. One thing she did was to dye baby chicks at Easter time and put the colorful chicks in the front window. Eloise married Howard Shaffer in 1946. They later moved to Centerville and opened Golden Age Manor in what is now Bradley Hall. In 1962 they built the new Golden Age Manor on Highway 5 South. They also were later divorced. Eloise continued to run the business until her retirement. She married Paul Phillips in Branson, Missouri in 1990. He died in 1996. She then married Jarvis Campbell in 1998 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He died in 2000. Since that time, she has lived in Exline, The Continental and the Shamrock. She is survived by two daughters: Janet Jones of Cedar Rapids and Ruth Evans (Edward) of Camanche; one son, Matthew "Bill" McAfee (Pat) of Centerville; 12 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great grandchildren; five step-children and a number of step- grand and great-grandchildren; three nieces and four nephews. She was preceded in death by all four husbands; one daughter, Gwendolyn "Candy" Sacco; two sons-in-law: Robert Jones and Robert Sacco; two step-sons; a step-daughter and a step daughter-in-law; three grandsons; a great-grandson; two step-sons; three brothers and their spouses: Virgil (Elsie), Cecil and Dean (Eva Mae) Corey and one sister, Eleanor Jones and spouse (late Marine Lt. Col. Robert) and one nephew. A visitation for Eloise will be held at Thomas Funeral Home on Friday, November 20, 2020 from 9:00 - 10:00 AM, followed by a graveside service at Morning Sun Cemetery in Morning Sun, Iowa that will take place at 2:30 PM.
