Elberta New's Obituary
Elberta Ellen New, age 84, of Corydon, passed away on November 16, 2019 at Corydon Specialty Care. Elberta was born on March 16, 1935 to Earl and Ruth (Lord) Fortune in Promise City, Iowa. Elberta graduated from Corydon High School in 1952. On February 14, 1953, Elberta married the love of her life, Oliver New in Hot Springs, Arkansas. They were married for 66 years. They had two children: Randy New of Des Moines and Janice Shelton of Indianola. Elberta enjoyed the outdoors; she loved fishing (with a cane pole of course), no fancy fishing rod for her, and she always caught the biggest fish. She helped with the cattle on the farm, naming and making pets of each one, spoiling her cats and dogs, camping, and boating, she loved the boating, just not so much the water as she did not know how to swim. She also enjoyed sewing; she made almost all of her family's clothes, and made many quilts with her mom and sisters, there was not anything she could not make. She enjoyed playing the guitar; she did not know any notes, just played by ear. In her early years she played and sang for the Centerville radio station. She also loved to cook, always making sure when the guys were putting up hay, they had plenty to eat, and she was famous for her homemade noodles, which we all loved. She could not pass up a good garage sale or auction, most always coming home with a box of treasures. Most of all, Elberta loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She taught us all how to enjoy life, and to live it to the fullest. After graduation Elberta worked in Des Moines, then returned to Corydon where she worked for Iowa Southern Utilities, then for the Wayne County Engineers Office for over 29 years, leaving there because of health issues. She is survived by her son Randy New, daughter Janice Shelton (Bob), grandchildren; Jonathan Shelton (Amy Preas) and Lori Troyer (Adam), great grandchildren; Brooke and Jake Troyer, brothers; Paul Fortune, Dwight Fortune, Jimmy Fortune (Eloise), David Fortune (Judy), sister Sue Gladson (Del), sister-in-law Lavonne Fortune, and numerous extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Ruth Fortune, husband Oliver New, brother Charles Fortune, sister Earlene McKee, brother-in-law Jack McKee, and sister-in-law Janet Fortune. Funeral service will be Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon with Pastor Nate Mason officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service at the Promise City Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 19, 2019 with family present from 5-7 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon.
