Edward Ray Phillips' Obituary
Edward Ray Phillips, age 96, of Centerville, Iowa, died Thursday, November 6, 2008 at Centerville Nursing & Rehab Center in Centerville. He was born the son of Perry and Ruth (Campbell) Phillips on August 9, 1912 in Centerville, Iowa. He graduated from the Centerville Community Schools with honors in 1930 and would later graduate from Centerville Junior College as well.Ed served his country during WWII with the United States Army from May 25, 1942 until his honorable discharge on January 18, 1946 he reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. On November 30, 1947, Ed was united in marriage to Miriam Breese in Centerville they were married over 60 years. He and his brother, John, started as business partners in the service station on the levee in Centerville and continued together from 1935 to 1975. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church as well as being a member of the Methodist Men. He was a past member of the Lion's Club, the Centerville Chamber of Commerce and a Sixty year member of the American Legion Post 214 in Centerville. He was also given the Iowa Governor's Volunteer Award in 1988.He was preceded in death by: his parents; brothers, Paul, Donald and John J. Phillips.Ed is survived by: his wife, Miriam Phillips of Centerville, Iowa; son, Larry and his wife, Linda Phillips of Lamoni, Iowa; grandchildren, Michael Edward Phillips of Corning, Iowa and Anne and her husband, Jim Shaffer of York, Pennsylvania; nieces, Janice Auld of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Connie Carlson of Clermont, Texas and Linda Schmidt of Houston, Texas; brother-in-laws, Don Breese and his wife, Janice of Centerville, Iowa and Ken Briggs and his wife, Beverly of Milton, Florida.Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at 10 AM at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa with Rev. Terra Amundson officiating. Burial will follow at the Oakland Cemetery in Centerville. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 10, 2008 from 1 pm till 8 pm at the funeral home with the family present from 6 pm till 8 pm.Memorials can be made to the Legacies Foundation at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville and can be left at the funeral home.
