Dwight Herschel Johnson's Obituary
Dwight Herschel Johnson, 71, formerly of Moravia, Iowa passed away at Corning Specialty Care in Corning, Iowa on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 surrounded by family.
Dwight was born on April 16, 1953 in Centerville, Iowa, the son of W. Herschel and Delma Johnson.
Dwight was baptized as a child and was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church.
On June 4, 1994, he was united in marriage with Betty Hopkins, and they had two boys, William and Andrew. They later divorced.
Immediately after high school, Dwight spent the summer in California fighting forest fires. He loved that and talked about it often. Dwight lived in several different places in the next several years working several jobs in his adventures. Dwight went to school off and on throughout those years and in 1985, graduated from Corpus Christi State in Corpus Christi, Texas with a degree in Business.
In 1991, Dwight became a truck driver and drove over the road for many years. He loved coming home and spoiling his boys, whom he called his A&W boys.
Dwight loved taking his boys on the truck with him when he could. He also loved taking them on adventures to the places he loved like Texas, Florida, Chicago at Christmas time, and especially Ouray, Colorado, where he and his family went camping many times in his childhood.
Dwight also loved his dogs, especially Bruiser, his black lab, whom he loved to sit on his porch with and take to the lake to swim.
Dwight was preceded in death by both sets of grandparents; his father, Herschel Johnson; his mother, Delma Johnson; his sister, Aleta Findlay; and his uncle, Charlie Johnson.
Dwight is survived by his sons, William and Andrew; his sister, Lorraine; and nephews, Jim Findlay and Iver Findlay.
A Celebration of Life Service for Dwight will be held at 11:00AM, Monday, March 3, 2025 at the First Lutheran Church in Centerville, Iowa with Pastor Jeremy McElvain officiating. Burial will take place at a later date. Visitation will take place Monday, March 3, 2025 at the First Lutheran Church in Centerville with the family greeting friends from 10:00-11:00AM.
