Keith Alan Garber, son of Chester Christopher and Mable Ione (Chambers) Garber was born during a blizzard at the home of his maternal grandparents in rural Fremont County, Iowa, on February 6, 1933 and passed away at Wayne County Hospital in Corydon on June 24, 2011. During Keith's childhood the family lived in a farmhouse owned by his Great Aunt Nina. His father was in the gas and oil business, driving a tanker truck and delivering to farmers and his mother was a teacher. After his graduation from Randolph Consolidated High School, Keith continued his education at University of Nebraska (class of 1954) and the University of Iowa College of Medicine (class of 1958), and then served in the U. S. Navy, 1959-1961. Keith married Ann Risk on July 11, 1959. Four children, Valerie, Andrew, Jennifer, and Matthew were born to this union, Keith, Ann and their small daughter, Valerie, moved to Corydon in 1961. Keith was devoted to Wayne County, where he practiced medicine from 1961 to 2007. He was a member of the Corydon Lions, Corydon Development Corporation, Wayne County Arts Council, Corydon Masonic Lodge, Corydon Community Betterment, Corydon Chamber of Commerce, served 22 years on the Corydon City Council, the American Medical Association, Iowa Medical Society, and the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians. He was the Medical Director of Hospice of Central Iowa 1997- 2007. "Doc" served as the president of the Iowa Academy of Physicians, 1976-1977. He was given honorable mention as the "Doctor of the Year" by Good Housekeeping magazine in 1977. He was given the "lifetime achievement" award by the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians in 2005. He and Ann were named the Corydon "Old Settlers" of the year in 2009. In 2010, the Emergency Services Department of Wayne County Hospital was named the "Keith A. Garber, M.D. Emergency Services." Also in 2010, he was named "Iowa Hospital Hero" by the Iowa Hospital Association. He was a member of the Allerton United Presbyterian Church for 50 years, where he served in numerous offices and loved to sing, both solo and in the choir. He produced, directed, and performed in Wayne Community Theatre on the Square. He and Ann enjoyed evenings of socializing and dining with friends as part of the Friday Club. His parents and sister Shirley Joan (Garber) Flood preceded him in death. Those left to honor his memory are his wife Ann, children Valerie, Andrew (Tina), Matthew (Colleen) and Jennifer (Kathy), grandchildren Benjamin, Patricia, Keith, Katy, Scott, Adriana, Gabriel and Jasmine and siblings Bill (Claudia) Garber, Joseph Flood, Joyce (Dick) Bawden and Dick (Rose) Garber, and other beloved family members. Memorials in honor of Dr. Keith A. Garber may be given to Hospice of Central Iowa, Allerton United Presbyterian Church or the Wayne County Hospital.
