Dorothy Pohl's Obituary
Dorothy Ann Clayton Pohl Dorothy Ann Clayton Pohl, the third child of Mary Alvina (Jennings) and Ernest T. Clayton, was born in Corydon, Iowa on December 2, 1926 and passed away, peacefully, on February 12, 2011 at the Continental Care Center in Seymour, Iowa. Dorothy attended Corydon grade school and graduated from Corydon High School in 1945. After high school she went on to Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, graduating in 1953. She then earned a BA Degree in Education from Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa in 1955. Dorothy taught classes from kindergarten to 4th grade, including Special Ed, from 1953-1971. She taught in New Mexico, California, Washington, locally in the Sewal consolidated school in Sewal, Iowa and the Corydon grade school. Dorothy was married to Anthony L. Pohl, a California rancher, from April 1958 until his death in December 1961. The couple had no children. From 1971 to 1988 Dorothy cared for her mother in Corydon until Alvina passed on in 1988. Dorothy lived at her home at 317 North Franklin Street in Corydon, Iowa from 1988 to 2008. Dorothy enjoyed a wide variety of activities including bird watching and art. Dorothy moved to the Continental Care Center in February 2008 where she was a resident until her death. Through Dorothy's lifetime, she was involved in many groups and activities: Brownie Girl Scout assistant leader, Methodist District youth camp counselor, high school church group advisor, church and choir member, PEO sister for almost 65 years and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, brothers John and David Clayton and sister Mary Porter. Dorothy is survived by nephews: Matt (Lisa) Clayton of Corydon, Iowa; Jim Porter, Jeff (Jewel) Porter of Cincinnati, Ohio, Joel (Nancy) Porter of Akron, Ohio and niece Kathy (Todd) Rohr of Liberty Township, Ohio and all of their families. Dorothy's smile and spunk will be missed by her family and friends. Memorials may be given to the Corydon United Methodist Church or the LeCompte Memorial Library.
