Dorothy McGee's Obituary
Dorothy Mary (Sell) McGee Dorothy Mary McGee was born on May 27, 1915 to Albert and Alice (McKee) Sell and passed away on January 16, 2011 at the age of 95. She was united in marriage on August 18, 1937 to Dean C. McGee of Allerton, Iowa. To that union were born two children, Walter McGee of Seymour, Iowa and Waverly (McGee) Engle of Branson, Missouri. She was a country schoolteacher in the Seymour area in the early years of her life. Her greatest love was taking care of all her family, including her children, nieces and nephews, grandchildren and all kinds of critters, even including her daughter's pet raccoon. She had an ability to nurse everyone back to health with a kiss, a hug and a bandage made of turpentine and brown sugar. Neighbors, Raymond and Minnie Berner and Helen and Milo Snider became like family to her. The men often helped each other with planting and harvesting, but the best part was the meals the women made. Although there is much dispute as to which was the best, Dorothy's pies, doughnuts, rolls, and noodles ranked right up their with some of the best-ever. From 1966-1970 she worked at the Wayne County Community Action program in Corydon, Iowa. After her husband passed away in 1975, she became the assistant coordinator of the Wayne County meal site in Corydon, Iowa. She loved working with people, playing bingo and planning trips. One of her most pleasant memories was the trip the seniors took to Estes Park, Colorado. After retiring in 1985, she worked as a home health aide. Dorothy liked making meals, and giving just a little comfort and companionship. She also helped take care of her grandchildren at least two days a week. She enjoyed taking them for walks in the timber and teaching them about the plants and the trees. From her the grandchildren learned and appreciation of their family and community heritage. Dorothy loved all of her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; daughter-in-law Annette McGee, three sisters, Mabel King of Unionville, MO, Deleda Shanks of Chariton, IA, and Wilma Burwell of Kansas City, MO; three brothers, Carl (Bill) Sell of Seymour, IA, Albert Sell, of Milan, IL and Clell Sell of Washington, IA. Those who celebrate her life are her children Walter McGee and Jeanette Gillund, Tom and Waverly Engle; grandchildren, Paul McGee and Robin of Altoona IA and children Autumn, Austin, and Avery; Mark and Debbie McGee of Colfax, IA and children Nick and Andy; Norma McGee of West Des Moines and great-grandson Kevin McGee and Jodi and children Hunter and Levi; Travis and Tina (Engle) Sellers of Kirbyville, MO and children Jordan and Taylor; Annette (Engle) Candler of Walnut Shade and child Connor; and Erica Engle of Walnut Shade, MO, as well as a host friends, family and neighbors.
