Dorothy E. Barnett's Obituary
Dorothy E. Barnett , age 86, of Centerville, Iowa, died Friday, January 23, 2004, at Centerville Nursing & Rehab Center in Centerville, Iowa. She was born at home in Decatur, Illinois on February 14, 1917, the only child of Arthur Pierce and Alta (Butler) Crippen. She lived most of her childhood in the Decatur area and in the South during the Depression. She graduated from Stephen Decatur High School in 1935.On June 9, 1936, Dorothy was united in marriage to James F. Brooks and they were divorced in 1947. Then on May 21, 1950, she was united in marriage to Billy B. Barnett. They lived in Hammond, Illinois for most of their married life. In their later years, they moved to Peoria, Illinois, Omaha, Nebraska and then Centerville, Iowa to be closer to their family. She was a homemaker most of her life, only working out of the home for a short period of time. She was a devoted wife, mother and loved her family and the time she spent with them.Dorothy was preceded in death by: her parents; husband, Billy Barnett on June 16, 1998.She is survived by her: daughters, Barbara 'Bobbe' Long and her husband, Robert of Hammond, Illinois, Lynnette 'Lynn' A. Connelly and her husband, Joe of Centerville, Iowa and Lynda L. Millard a resident of Maui, Hawaii, currently residing in Riyadh, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; her step-mother, Florence Crippen of Mt. Pulaski, Illinois; Seven grandchildren, Ten great-grandchildren, and One great-great-grandchild.Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 25, 2004, at Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa, from 1 pm till 8 pm, with a service at 7 pm with Charles Conger officiating. A second visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 from 10 am till 12:45 pm at the Hilligoss-Shrader Funeral Home in Atwood, Illinois. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 2004, at the Hammond Cemetery near Hammond, Illinois at 1 pm.The family request, In lieu of flowers, that memorials be made to the Centerville Nursing & Rehab Activity Fund in her name and can be mailed to or left at the To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Dorothy E.
