DOROTHA CARTER's Obituary
DOROTHA BAKER CARTER Dorotha Marie Boyce Baker Carter was born November 1, 1928 in Clark County, Iowa to Howard C. and Ivah Ellen Brattain Boyce. She passed away on November 21, 2012 at the Corydon Nursing and Rehab Center at the age of 84 years and 22 days. In her youth she lived in the Humeston and Allerton areas on farms with her parents and sisters Vera and Reva. Dorotha graduated from Allerton High School in 1947. She worked 4 years as a telephone operator in Allerton. Dorotha was a member of the Allerton United Presbyterian Church. On January 1, 1951 Dorotha married Ried McCall Baker at the Allerton United Presbyterian Church. To this union two children were born: Janet Elaine and Kenny Dean. They farmed five miles west of Allerton. Dorotha loved the farm life of a wife: raising chickens, hogs, stock cattle, planting a huge garden, canning and cooking for her family and friends. In 1958 they built one of the first farm homes with electric heat. On April 21, 1965 Ried passed away with lung cancer. Dorotha spent countless hours at his bedside in the hospital and helping with farming duties as his health permitted. Dorotha began working as a cook at the Wayne Community School and moved to Corydon. In the basement of her home she opened Baker's Tea Room and enjoyed cooking for the public. Her next endeavor was opening Baker's Restaurant in Corydon. After selling the restaurant, she lived in Des Moines working at restaurants, was a nanny, and helped care for the elderly. On February 18, 1989 she married Daryl Carter and moved to Humeston. They enjoyed spending their winters in Arizona and California. Daryl passed away July 28, 1999. In October 2001 Dorotha became a resident of the Corydon Nursing and Rehab Center. Dorotha was preceded in death by her husbands, Ried Baker and Daryl Carter, parents, sister Vera Hamilton, and stepson Donald Carter. Dorotha is survived by her daughter Janet (Danny) Sheets, Indianola, Iowa; son Kenny (Lisa) Baker, Fordland, Missouri; grandsons Ried (Molly) Baker, Columbia, Missouri and Garth Baker, Fayetteville, Arkansas; step-daughter Ann (Richard) Gohman; sister Reva Shipley; sister-in-law Luree Straup; brother-in-law Keith (Nancy) Baker and numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends including her Nursing Home family.
