Doris Christy's Obituary
Doris B. Christy, 85, of Humeston passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at Golden Age Care Center in Centerville. Doris was born on April 5, 1932 to Gilbert & Edith (Townsend) Callen on the family farm West of Iconium, Iowa. As a young girl, she attended country school and the Methodist Church in Iconium. She and her parents, sisters and brother were a very close family and enjoyed farm life to its fullest. She received her education from Moravia Schools graduating in 1950. On June 4, 1951, Doris was united in marriage to Wayne Christy in Moravia. To this union came three girls: Elaine, Joyce and Carol. Early in their marriage they farmed and raised their daughters in the Iconium area. In 1974, they moved to Humeston, Iowa where Wayne was the plant manager for Ideal Ready Mix and lived there until late 2016 when they moved to The Homestead in Centerville, Iowa. Doris was a homemaker and enjoyed collecting bears of any type, and creating beautiful counted cross stitch pictures for her friends and family. When her daughters were young, her main focus was keeping them in line with a gentle and loving hand. She enjoyed spending as much time as possible with her grandchildren and always took great pleasure in watching them participate at their sporting events, band and swing choir performances and also watching her granddaughter Erin in dance. Survivors include her husband Wayne, daughters: Elaine Spencer (Stanley), Joyce Hocker, Carol Smith (Lester), grandchildren: Chris Spencer (Amy), Megan Irving (Richard), Cole Hocker (Bre), Alex Hocker, Erin Hocker, great grandchildren: Finley, Kenna & Jaida Spencer; Jacob & Aubrey Irving, brother-in-law, Elmer Clayton, sister-in-law, Doris Christy and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, four siblings, Crystal Wiand, Virginia Clayton, Richard Callen, and Beverly Olson and a son-in-law Dan Hocker. In addition, she was predeceased by brothers-in-law Bill Wiand, Fred Christy, Doyle Christy and George Olson, along with two sisters-in-law Florence Callen and Mary Lou Christy. Funeral service will be 11:00 am, Friday, January 12, 2018 at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon with Pastor Diane Olson Schroeder officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior from 10-11am. Interment will be in Iconium Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Humeston Fire Department or the Humeston First Responders and condolences may be shared at www.thomasfh.com.
