Doris I Bland's Obituary
Doris Bland, age 96, went to be with the Lord on January 3, 2026 at Putnam County Care Center in Unionville, Mo.
Doris was born on a farm near Rolfe, Iowa. A lady doctor who drove a horse and buggy delivered her at the home of her parents, Robert and Ada (Wise) Sievert on February 28, 1929. Her parents lost the farm during the depression when she was nine months old. Then she moved with her parents and older brother, Ben, to Lake City, Iowa.
Doris graduated from Lake City High School in 1948. After graduation Doris worked for a local telephone company in Lake City, Iowa. Later Doris worked in Mason City at the Psych Ward as an aide. Doris then took nurses training at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and graduated with her LPN degree in 1959.
Doris traveled in Europe for three months visiting 15 countries in 1963. After that she started working as an LPN in Des Moines, Iowa at Younkers Rehab where she met her future husband, Carold Bland, who was her patient after his back surgery. They were married May 1, 1965. At the time of their marriage Carold had five children, Rodger age 22, Connie age 21, Ken age 18, and Andy age 14, and Greg age 12. Two years later Doris adopted Rodger, Connie, Andy, and Greg. Doris was a devoted wife to Carold in their 53 years of marriage.
Carold passed away at the age of 95 in 2018. Ken passed away in 1993 and Andy in 2019. Through that marriage Doris gained 13 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and 9 great, great grandchildren.
Carold and Doris both enjoyed traveling and seeing what was "on the other side of the mountain." They especially enjoyed attending Carold's WWII 12th Armored Division to reunions and reminiscing with Carold's old tank buddies Brickle and Lumpkin.
Doris always enjoyed sewing. Her expertise was piecing quilt pieces together which takes much precision and patience. Doris produced many, many beautiful quilts over the years.
Doris was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Widows of the Lake, Friends of the Library, Lake Thunderhead Book Club, and Lake Thunderhead Sewing Club.
Doris was raised Presbyterian and accepted the Lord as a child. In the 1970's she was baptized as an adult under Pastor Clifford Hart of the Christian Church.
Those who also preceded her in death besides Carold, Andy, and Ken were her parents Robert and Ada Sievert, and her brother Ben Sievert. Also her father and mother-in-law, Harley and Sylvia Bland, brothers-in-law Dale Bland, Bill Bland, Dean Bland and his wife, Darlene, sister-in-law Evelyn Bland Richardson and her husband George, grandson Corey Bland, and daughter-in-law Terri Jackson Bland.
