Donald "Baby Cakes" Strickler's Obituary
Donald L.'Baby Cakes' Strickler, age 74 of Moulton, Iowa, died on Sunday, May 8, 2011 at his home in Moulton. On December 25th, 1936 a bouncing baby boy was delivered to Willard Chalmers and Maxine Ruth (Ayer) Strickler. Until this day; neighbors, friends, and relatives believe the baby was possibly a gift from god, a special package left by Santa Claus, or perhaps a dropping found from where the reindeer stood. It's still up for grabs as to his arrival - but he was named Donald Lawrence, better known as 'Baby Cakes'.Don received his education from the Centerville High School and graduated in 1956 and later enlisted in the Army where he spent 6 years serving his country. As most people are aware Don believed the best education was the 'school of hard knocks', where he never missed a day. Don worked various jobs through out his life; from helping his father deliver bread for the Harvest Bread Co., delivering newspapers, being a stock boy at HyVee, painting bridges for the railroad, and various factory jobs including the Shaffer Pen Co. in Fort Madison - where he worked his finger to the bone. Most family and friends remember 'Strick' during the years he worked and operated the Moulton Tire Shop. A lot of sweat and laughter happened in the tire shop. Sweat poured from Strick when he worked hard at breaking down Semi/Tractor tires but there may have been just as much sweat on his forehead when he set down to eat a grilled steak, baked potato and salad with his good buddy Bud Light? If you threw in some type of sweet dessert, Strick was a very happy man! He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #317 in Moulton, Iowa and a member of the Kaaba Shrine in Davenport, Iowa. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by: his father, Willard C. Strickler; a son, Bradley L. Strickler; and a sister, Darlene Oilar.Don is survived by: his mother, Maxine R. Strickler of Kahoka, Missouri; his brothers, Duane Strickler and his wife, Ann of Buhl, Idaho and Darrel Strickler of Troy, Missouri; sisters, Delma Shaffer of Cincinnati, Iowa and Diana Elam and her husband, Virgil of Kahoka, Missouri; a brother-in-law, Bob Oilar of Revere, Missouri; several nieces, nephews and close friends, especially, Marilyn Wood of Moulton, Iowa.Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2011at 10 am at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Moulton, Iowa with Rev. Brian Hargrave officiating. Burial will follow with full military honors at the Sunset View Cemetery north of Moulton.
