Donald L. Smith, age 96, of Centerville died Monday, January 23, 2012 at Golden Age Care Center, Centerville, Iowa.
Donald was born November 15, 1915 in Fremont, Iowa the son of Ralph and Mae E. (Smich) Smith. He graduated from Fremont High School. Donald married Helen Tressler. She preceded him in death. He later married Alice (Millemon) Simmons on November 15, 1983 in Arkansas. Donald spent most of his working life in farming. He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Centerville.
He is survived by his wife Alice Smith of Moravia; children Sherry Groenwald of Longmont, CO, Vickie Crawford of Waterloo, Iowa, Tim Smith and Michael Smith of Ottumwa, Iowa, Nancy Landry of Maryland; many grandchildren; 5 step children, Gary Simmons of Monroe, Iowa, Danny Simmons of Gillette, Wyoming, Beverly Cormeny of Gillette, Wyoming, Charlotte Senior of Knoxville, Iowa, and Patricia Simmons of Merritt Island, Florida.
He was preceded in death by a wife Helen Tressler; his parents; four children, Fred Smith, Linda DeFord, Robert Smith, and Gail Traul.
Funeral services will be held 11 AM Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the Lange Funeral Home, Moravia with Fr. Dennis Schaab officiating. Friends may call Friday from 1PM to 8PM at the Lange Funeral Home, Moravia. The family will be present from 6-8 PM at the funeral home. Entombment will be in the Shrine of Memories Mausoleum, Ottumwa. Memorials have been established to the family and may be sent to 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.
