Donald William Davis' Obituary
Donald William Davis, 85, of Moulton, Iowa, died on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville, Iowa from complications of a stroke. He was born the eldest son to Lloyd and Velta (Ransom) Davis on June 26, 1923 near Moulton, Iowa. He attended elementary school at Center Country School and at Orleans Country School and later would graduate from Centerville Community Schools with the Class of 1940.Don served in the U.S. Army as a motor sergeant for two years in 1945, stationed in Texas and Tokoyo, Japan. After returning from the Army, he married Joan (Howard) Davis in Moulton, Iowa on June 6, 1948. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last summer with a large gathering of family and friends. Don farmed his entire life in Appanoose County. He was a Pioneer seed corn sales representative for 33 years and sold Vigortone feed from 1977 to 2007. Don milked as many as 35 cows for 18 years, and his beef cowherd grew to nearly 150 head before he retired from farming. He was active on the Board of Trustees for Washington Township for many years, Farmers Mutual Telephone Board, the State Line CB Club, Country Pickers, and was a member of the Moulton United Methodist Church.He was preceded in death by: his parents; sisters, Eileen Fowler and Leora Whisler; brother, Roland Dale Davis.Don is survived by his devoted wife, Joan Davis of Moulton, Iowa; sons Charles and his wife, Janet Davis, Rex and his wife, Dianna Davis, Chris and his wife, Janet Davis, and Lloyd and his wife, Mary Davis all of Moulton, Iowa; and a daughter, Diane Fine of Lamoni, Iowa; his eleven grandchildren: Tara (Davis) Baldwin, Katie (Davis) Powell, Brian Davis, Cole Davis, Beth Davis, Jessica Fine, Kayla (Fine) Bousum, Lydia Fine, Monica Fine, Marie (Davis) Dinwiddie, and Kyle Davis; and a step-granddaughter, Jerilyn (Withrow) Lasley. Don was able to share in the joy of 11 great-grandchildren: Molly and Blake Baldwin, Kendall and John Davis, Matthew and Bradley Dinwiddie, Landon and Carter Powell, Samuel Fine, Alaina Bousum, and step-great-granddaughter Mandalyn Martin; his sisters, Doris Wilson of Moravia, Iowa, Lois Fox of Moulton, Iowa, Vera White of Winterset, Iowa, and Lucille Bird of Moulton, Iowa; brothers, Leland Davis of Moulton and Max Davis of Centerville, Iowa; many other relatives and friends.Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at 10 AM at the Moulton United Methodist Church in Moulton, Iowa with Rev. Jim Schweizer officiating. Burial will follow at the Sunset View Cemetery north of Moulton, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 27 from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville with the family present from 6 pm till 8 pm at the funeral home.His family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials to be made to the Moulton United Methodist Church and can be left at the funeral home.
