Dickie L. Smith's Obituary
Dickie L. Smith, age 72, of Centerville, Iowa, died Sunday, February 1, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville. He was born the son of Arance E. and Elsie Fern (Daniels) Smith on June 27, 1936 in Steffinsville, Missouri. He graduated from the Fort Madison High School in 1954 and later attended two more years of college in Minnesota.On September 14, 1957, Dickie was united in marriage to Barbara J. Seyb in Fort Madison, Iowa. His first job found him working for the Burlington Railroad and later the Santa Fee Railroad as a Depot Agent and a Telegrapher. Later, Dickie would move his family to Bloomfield, Iowa to work at his own transport Company. Dickie spent most of his career working for G.A. Wright Company of Denver, Colorado as an Independent Sales Consultant where he would help store owners liquidated inventory. His travels would take him all over the United States and Canada and rewarding him with the chance of meeting interesting people, place and things we would get to see. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Centerville, Iowa where he was head usher for many years. He was also a member of the Jackson Masonic Lodge #42 in Centerville.He was preceded in death by: his father, Arance E. Smith; a daughter, Valerie Dawn McLaren; and a sister, Joyce McCullouch.Dickie was survived by: his wife, Barbara Smith of Centerville, Iowa; sons, Bryan K. Smith and his wife, Lisa of Yucca Valley, California; Scott A. Smith of Centerville, Iowa; Gregory L. Smith and his wife, Janet of Yucca Valley, California; daughter, Kimberly LeAnne Whisler of Felton, Delaware; and a AFS Student, Max Herren of Ontario, Canada; Nine grandchildren and Four great grandchildren.Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, February 5, 2009 at 10 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Centerville, Iowa with Rev. Terra Amundson officiating. Burial will follow at the Haines Cemetery north of Centerville. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 from 1 pm till 8 pm at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville with the family present from 6 pm till 8 pm and a Masonic Service held at 7:30 pm at the funeral home.Memorials can be made to either the Iowa Diabetes Association or First United Methodist Church in Centerville and can be left at the funeral home.
