Dennis Allen's Obituary
Dennis Max Allen, 65 of Corydon, Iowa passed away on February 1, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. Dennis was born June 9, 1952 to Charles and Doris (Couchman) Allen in Centerville, Iowa. After graduating from Seymour High School in 1970, Dennis attended Indian Hills Community College and earned a degree in Diesel Mechanics. While there, Dennis met numerous friends who would turn out to be lifelong friends who gather every year. Dennis and Marcia always looked forward to the annual 4th of July gathering where many of those friends would come and Dennis would enjoy driving the men around the farm while the ladies prepared the meal and visited. Dennis married Marcia Brown in Corydon on March 24, 1974 and to this union, two daughters were born. Dennis and Marcia spent the first years of their marriage on farms around Seymour and Sewal and bought their current farm on the Iowa-Missouri state line south of Sewal in 1990. Dennis worked at Shivvers Manufacturing for a total of 24 years and later worked for the Wayne County Road Department for 16 years and served as the foreman of the bridge crew. Dennis enjoyed his lifelong work on his family farm, working alongside his father and brothers, Ronnie and Steve. Dennis spent his whole life working hard at whatever task that was ahead of him, whether it was putting up hay, caring for his cattle, building fence or making some new invention that would certainly make farming easier. Dennis didn't know a stranger and was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He was often late to events because he had stopped along the way to help someone. His neighbors were always a high priority for him; if he suspected they needed a hand, he would be there. They were also always there for him. It's what good neighbors who were good friends did. He made it his mission to teach his daughters the importance of hard work, as they and their families continued to help him on the farm. Growing up, his daughters remember hearing their dad say many, many times, "If you're going to do it, do it right," or "Do it right the first time." He never hesitated to teach his daughters any aspect of farm life. If he could do it, he could teach them to do it, and they did. He was extremely proud of how capable and hard working his daughters were. His grandchildren had just begun to learn good grandpa lessons and had made some good memories as they helped Grandpa on the farm. Dennis is survived by his mother, Doris Allen of Corydon, wife, Marcia Allen of Corydon, and daughters Angela (Randy) Downs of Corydon and Deanna (Vincent) Wiederholt of Hamilton, Missouri, grandchildren: Mary Ann Downs, Zebulun Nading, Zachary Nading and Sydney Downs, all of Corydon, brothers: Ronnie (Jane) Allen of Promise City and Steve (Larisa) Allen of Corydon, along with numerous nieces, nephews and many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father Charles Allen. Funeral service will be Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon.
