Deloris Mathes' Obituary
Deloris Lavone (McHenry) Mathes, 79, passed away at the Schuyler County Nursing Home in Queen City, Missouri on Sunday, March 4, 2018. Deloris was born in Glendale, Missouri on May 9, 1937, the daughter of George and Opal (Hanen) McHenry who preceded her in death. Growing up a "coal miner's daughter," she spent nearly all of her years in Putnam County's east end. She was united in marriage to Gerald Mathes on April 20, 1957. Deloris was a housewife for most of her life. She worked at Davis Chevrolet in Unionville, Missouri and later at Wells Manufacturing in Centerville, Iowa. She was elected and served as a board member of the Putnam County Nursing Home for a time. Deloris cherished spending time with her family and friends. She and her sister, Sheila enjoyed playing the slot machines at various casinos, seeing the Statler Brothers when they played nearby, family wiener roasts in the summertime and playing cards with relatives and friends. One of her favorite memories was playing high school basketball with her sister, Sheila at Livonia. Deloris was an outstanding cook and baker; making some of the best cakes and pies for birthdays, family reunions and events such as the Livonia Picnic. She was also an expert seamstress; making clothes, blankets and quilts for her children and grandchildren. She was dedicated to her children and grandchildren, teaching them to read and write before they entered grade school and later ensuring they were always at 4-H meetings, Little League games and band practice. In her later years, Deloris enjoyed baking, feeding the many barn yard cats and telephoning her network of 'east end' friends. Deloris will leave the legacy and life lessons of hard work, grit, determination and patience with her close friends and family. Deloris is survived by her two sons: Jon Mathes of Glendale, and Jeff Mathes (Michele) of Morrison, TN; two sisters: Sheila Probasco and Carol Prewitt. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Jon Drew Bruner, Rachel Mathes, Ashley Mairs and Danielle Mathes as well as two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Those who preceded Deloris in death are her husband, Gerald; her daughter, Susan Mathes; her brother, George Paul McHenry and sister, Evelyn Faye Allen. A memorial service will be held at the McCune Cemetery near Livonia, Missouri on March 31, 2018 at 1:00 PM, (weather permitting).
