Deloris Maxine Darrah's Obituary
Deloris Maxine Darrah was born March 7, 1929, to Wayne Ora Rash and Mary Pearl Rotisky Rash in Jerome, Iowa. She passed away at the Wayne County Hospital in Corydon, Iowa on July 13, 2023, at the age of 94.
Deloris attended school through 8th grade in Jerome and graduated from Seymour High School in 1947.
On December 12, 1948, she married Eugene Howard Darrah, son of Roy and Vera Darrah of Seymour. Two daughters, Darla Jean (Josh) Wells and Dian Lynn (Todd) Rider were born to this union. They lived on a farm outside of Seymour, and eventually built a home in rural Cincinnati, and together they farmed row crops and raised livestock in Appanoose and Putnam counties. She continued the farming operation after Gene's death in 1972 with the assistance of Ron Snider, until Darla and Josh took over the farming and purchased the farms.
Prior to marriage, Deloris worked at Appanoose Telephone Company and Harkert Houses, Inc. She worked at Uniform Printing after marriage, and later in life at the Seymour Congregate Meal Site as director and cook.
She had a strong Christian faith, was a member of the Seymour United Methodist Church, and attended the Glad Hand Sunday School Class. She assisted with the annual Harvest Home Dinner, making homemade noodles and pies, and provided home-cooked dishes for funeral dinners. She also assisted with the Methodist Youth Fellowship and served as a treasurer.
Deloris was a member of the Seymour Legion Auxiliary and served on the Seymour Community Center Board.
Before having their daughters, Deloris and Gene enjoyed square dancing with friends and neighbors. She also enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, and would can and freeze much of the produce she grew. Her sweet pickles and pickled beets were enjoyed at holiday and family dinners. She was always the designated noodle and dressing maker in the family and has passed down those techniques to her daughters and granddaughters-in-law. She made perfect divinity candy for the holidays. She was always up for a card game of Pitch, bird watching outside her window while playing word search, watching gospel and country music tv shows, spending time with family at Lake Thunderhead, and following men's tennis (especially Novak Djokovic) and March Madness Basketball Tournaments. She also loved watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's ballgames and activities.
Preceding her in death were her parents Wayne and Mary Rash; husband Eugene Darrah; sisters Genevieve (Richard) Mincks and Rowena (Don) Robinson; son-in-law Josh Wells; niece Mary Couchman; brothers-in-law Dalton (Thelma) Darrah and Duane Darrah; and sisters-in-law Alberta (Miles) Snider and Romona (Gene) Gibbs.
Survivors are daughters Darla Wells and Dian (Todd) Rider; grandchildren Nathan (Jessica) Wells, Nolan (Kelsey) Wells and Seth Wells; great-grandchildren Madelyn, Tyne, Mason and Royce Wells; sister-in-law Florence Darrah and many extended family members.
