Delbert Liggett's Obituary
Delbert Wayne Liggett (age 78) of rural Sewal, Iowa passed away surrounded by his family on March 22, 2025 at Mayo in Rochester, Minnesota. Delbert was born November 20, 1946 to Donald and Opal Liggett at Corydon, IA. He graduated from Seymour High School in 1964. He was drafted into the Army and was stationed in Budingen, Germany from 1966-68. After being honorably discharged, he returned to work at his family's farm raising sheep, cattle, hogs, dairy and beef cattle.
One of his fondest memories was when he first met his wife, Cheryl, at the Putnam County fair. He described it that she stood out from the crowd and as soon as he saw her, he knew he wanted to meet her. Not long after, he knew she was the one he wanted to spend his life with. They were wed in marriage August 10, 1974. He always said he married above his level. Delbert was married to Cheryl for 23 years before her tragic and sudden passing. During this time they had two children, Natalie and Don.
He continued to work hard on the family farm, raising fat calves and putting more emphasis on the cattle. He was very knowledgeable when it came to cattle and a good steward of the land. He was successful in keeping the farm going through difficult times and expanding it as well.
Not only did he enjoy his livestock, he had a love for music. He enjoyed attending shows in Branson, jam sessions, school concerts put on by his daughter and music in general. He was most happy to listen anytime his kids would sing. He also took an interest in cars and always took the opportunity to enter his '68 Ford galaxy in car shows near and far. More than his hobbies, he had a love for people. He always made his family a priority and found time to visit with his neighbors and friends. You could often find him at a local gas station, restaurant, or event his grandchildren would be in or had going on. They were a bright light in his life. Later in life, he enjoyed his breakfast outings, Taco Tuesdays and his fitness group in Leon. He was known counties wide and had a smile for everyone everywhere he went. We would always kid that no one could forget a name like Delbert, but the truth is, no one could forget him. He left a lasting impression. He was kind and genuine to the core. That is apparent by the number of people he touched and friends that he had. He would remark that he wanted to live his life in a way that no one would have to lie about him in his obituary.
Delbert is survived by his two children, Natalie Brown (Shane) and Don Liggett (Missy), His grandchildren, Reagen, Kipton, and Jasper Liggett. He is also survived by his sister, Sherry DeVore (Don). He was proceeded in death by his beloved wife, Cheryl. His parents Opal and Donald Liggett. His in-laws, Woodie and Charlotte Martin and a sister-in-law, Janet Haffner.
Delbert came to know Jesus in a personal way as his savior. We are on borrowed time here and he is now at peace in his eternal home in Heaven.
