While Dave was working in the Bureau of Reclamation's Yuma Area Office, I took him on a tour of the YDP and we spent a morning in the waste and recyclable material collection area at that time due to night hawks nesting on the ground in the area. A contractor for material removal was due to arrive and work in that area. Dave showed us what not to do and then very carefully moved two nests - one with eggs only (he had really good eyesight since the eggs were the same color as the ground) and one with eggs and chicks. After doing this he asked for a tour of the YDP which unfortunately ran into a couple of flat tires on the same day in two different pickups. I remember his laughing about the tires and being positive about the whole day. I did finally give him a tour of the area he was interested in and enjoyed the birds we saw on the way there as well as the discussion we had about the wildlife and waterfowl that make their homes in the Yuma area drains. What more to say about such a gentle, warm, humble, thoughtful giant of a man, whose friendships were like his dearest gifts! We were treasures to Dave, a rare feeling in the rat-race world we endure. That he left our midst, and that rat-race, for these last few years was survival for him and a great loss for us. I am deeply saddened by this news. Dave was an amazing person - somebody you could talk about anything with. I'll never forget his perpetual smile, and to look into his eyes... always confirming that you were a kindred spirit. Together, we fought a few (of his many) battles to make this planet a cleaner, better place to live. And, when he retired I committed that I would carry this torch, one of the many torches he lit, in his stead so that he could enjoy what he had spent a career fighting for. I only wish that he could have enjoyed it much much longer. Dave's warm heart, sharp intellect, and cool style still, and always will, remain vivid in my mind. Saludos! Dave was a great part of our group dedicated to restoring injured natural resources. His sense of humor and patience helped us through many challenging projects. During a major renovation and office-move I was happy to accompany Dave and others as part of the Office of Midnight Requisition. The lovingly framed State-magnet display board that we uncovered in a pile of rubble still hangs proudly on my wall. Having grown up on a farm, my mother and I were both delighted to see Dave moving boxes to his new office one day in his denim overalls. My favorite memory with Dave was the day that he offered me a lift home to DC from Shepherdstown, WV. We got talking about travel stories, and somehow ended up at BWI airport, then Alexandria, VA before we decided it might be quicker for me to take the Metro. Dave was one of the people I met first, when I started with the Restoration Program, almost 17 years ago. I have many, many fond memories of Dave, talking with him at meetings, discussing site interests with him during rides to project locations, walking with him on field trips, and most vibrant memories of joking with him during casual, after hours, get-togethers. His tendency to include any, and all, in discussions of topics related to projects and the program made him a favorite among Department of the Interior bureau staff. His competency in his job, and unique ability to understand the sometimes competing interests involved in our projects made him a great friend to the Fish and Wildlife Service. His wonderful sense of humor, and ability to show sincere interest in a person as an individual, made him a friend to me. I lost touch with Dave in the years after his retirement, but that in no way diminishes my sadness at the loss of this wonderful person. I hope his family and friends realize that Dave will always live on, through recollection of his deeds and memories of his thoughtful personality. I'll miss you buddy, enjoy the Cosmos. I want to echo what Steve S. and Charlie F. have so eloquently already said. Dave brought so much more than his knowledge to the Department of Interior - I was always heartened to see the merriment that was so close to the surface in him even as we struggled with difficult challenges in dealing with damaged parts of the environment.
