David Goughnour's Obituary
David Neill Goughnour, the son of Guy and Ruth (Johnson) Goughnour, was born May 21, 1941, in Leon, Iowa. David’s family spent his childhood in Allerton. He had many happy memories of small town life in Allerton in the 1940‘s and 50‘s and the friends and teachers he had there. Later, the family moved to Knoxville and then Corydon when his father moved the family monument business. David graduated from Corydon High School with the Class of ‘59.
Following two years in the army in Hawaii where he served as a military illustrator, David returned home and received a Bachelor of Science in Art Education from Northeast Missouri State College (now Truman University.) His first teaching assignment was in the East Union School District. He later went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Educational Media from Iowa State University. While a graduate student there, he was in charge of the Design Center Gallery, a position he truly enjoyed. His responsibilities included arranging for art exhibits, speakers, and artists-in-residence and preparing catalogs for the exhibits.
Following graduation from Iowa State, he worked for the Marshalltown Area Education Agency preparing teaching aids for children with special needs. In 1983, he joined the staff of Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville where he taught advertising design and media graphics until his retirement.
After retirement, David returned to Wayne county to help his father with the Goughnour Monument Company offices in Corydon and Leon, and Princeton, Missouri. He enjoyed meeting people and working with them as they purchased memorials for their loved ones.
David married Marilyn Michael in 1966 and became the very proud father of two daughters, Gabrielle and Anne, and the grandfather of two granddaughters, Auden and Olivia.
Although he felt no regrets at not having had sons, David felt very blessed with his two sons-in-law who turned out to be, not only very good husbands, but very caring fathers to his two grandchildren.
David was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, daughter Gabrielle Eaton and husband Rick, daughter Anne Alberhasky and husband, Mike, granddaughters Auden Eaton and Olivia Alberhasky, brother Steven Goughnour and wife Deb of Monroe City, MO, sister Barbara Williams and her husband Robert of Melbourne, FL.
