I have to say Uncle Danny was always my favorite uncle! When our family would go to visit Grandma at her farm, Danny would come from Des Moines to spend time with us. From fishing trips, to stomping around the woods, to sightseeing with he and my dad (Steve), we had so much fun and have such good memories of those times. Danny loved to tease but was kind and thoughtful as well...and did he ever blush when my dad would tease him. We loved to see him blush! The last time I was in Iowa (unfortunately too long ago), dad and I decided to have an adventure and take Amtrak to Iowa from California. Danny picked us up in Ottumwa and we had the best week and a half there visiting with Grandma, fishing (of course), boating, visiting old friends and relatives, and combing through old, abandoned homesteads searching for treasures. After that, Danny sometimes sent me old bottles that he found in the area. They are still my treasures. We went up to the tri-cities to visit Frances and her family. Helen and Buck were there and Uncle Tony and Aunt Vi came from Chicago. We went to a Croatian bbq that night in the tri-cities and on the way back to Centerville, Danny's car broke down. By then it was about midnight and we had to wait a long time on a lonely, dark road to be rescued! It was that trip that he and my dad introduced me to wild hickory nuts and I loved them! The next Christmas Danny sent me about 4 or 5 pounds of the nuts which he had taken the time to gather, crack, husk, and clean so only the nut meats remained. I still cherish and appreciate the time and thought of that wonderful and delicious gift. Such precious memories of a kind and loving (and sometimes stubborn) soul. Uncle Danny, may God bring peace and comfort to you and your family. God bless you, Bo Posted by Anne (Bo) Zaputil Johnson - Merced, CA - Niece October 13, 2012
