Daniel Lee Hurt's Obituary
Daniel Lee Hurt, age 66, of Centerville, passed away Friday, April 10, 2026 at Golden Age Care Center, surrounded by his loved ones.
Daniel was born on June 30, 1959 in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Frank and Ruby (Chapman) Hurt. A proud graduate of Davenport Central High School's Class of 1978, Daniel soon set out to build a life full of purpose and connection. After moving to Centerville, he and a few friends decided-on a bit of a whim-to take the military entrance test. Daniel passed with pride and entered basic training, embracing the challenge with determination. Though his time in the service was cut short due to a knee injury that led to an honorable discharge, he carried that sense of pride and perseverance with him throughout his life.
It was in Centerville, at the local activities center, where Daniel's life truly changed. There, he met Shari-the love of his life. The two were married on April 11, 1987, and shared 39 wonderful years together. Daniel's love for Shari was unwavering; he always made sure she came first and was cared for above all else, even as his health began to fade.
Daniel's life was one marked by resilience, devotion, and a spirited sense of humor that left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Daniel was known for his ornery charm and playful teasing. He never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere. His gift for connection made people feel welcome, and his sense of humor kept them smiling.
He had a deep love for bowling, spending countless hours at the lanes each week. It wasn't just a hobby-it was a passion he eagerly passed down to his nephew. Even after an arm injury forced him to step back from bowling, Daniel could still be found at the alley, offering tips, encouragement, and plenty of good-natured razzing. He also proudly participated in Special Olympics, earning several medals and trophies throughout the years-achievements that brought him great pride and joy.
Daniel proudly participated in Boy Scouts for many years, where he developed a strong sense of responsibility, leadership and a lifelong appreciation of the outdoors. Daniel also dedicated many years as a church youth camp counselor in Iowa and Nebraska, guiding and encouraging young people until his injury made it impossible to continue. His faith remained a cornerstone of his life, and he was a devoted member of Solid Rock Church of God in Centerville.
Outside of his many commitments, Daniel found joy in life's simple pleasures-fishing, shooting pool, tossing horseshoes, and playing cards. He was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Centerville Big Reds, NASCAR, WWE, and the Iowa Hawkeyes, always ready to cheer on his favorite teams.
Above all, Daniel's heart was rooted in kindness and generosity. He loved his family and friends deeply and never hesitated to lend a helping hand. Whether delivering holiday meals to those in need or offering support to someone going through a tough time, Daniel showed his love through action.
He will be remembered for his laughter, his loyalty, and the way he made people feel seen and valued. His presence will be deeply missed, but the memories he created will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Those left to honor Daniel's memory are his wife, Shari Hurt; his sister, Becky (Alan) Boyter; his brother, Matt (Lois) Hurt; his sisters-in-law, Deanna Brinegar and Karla (John) Deahl; Andy (Vicky) Withrow and Randy (Beth) Withrow; as well as numerous extended family members and friends.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Ruby Hurt; his grandparents, Daniel and Lucille Hurt and Clarence and Pauline Chapman; his in-laws, Clarence and Mary Jane Withrow; his brother-in-law, Tommy Brinegar; as well as several family members and friends.
Funeral services for Daniel will be held at 11:00AM, Thursday, April 16, 2026 at the Solid Rock Church of God in Centerville with Pastor Tony Angran officiating. Cremation will follow the service. The family will do a graveside service at a later date at Dale Cemetery. Visitation will take place Wednesday, April 15, 2026 at Thomas Funeral Home in Centerville, with the family greeting friends from 5:00PM-7:00PM. Memorials may be written to Becky Boyter, to be used towards final expenses and something special in his name, and may be mailed to Thomas Funeral Home, ATTN: Hurt Family, 501 North 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa 52544.
