Col. Herbert H. Price's Obituary
Col. Herbert H. Price, Ret. USAF, age 91 of rural Moulton, Iowa passed away, Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at his daughter's home in Valley, Nebraska. He was born the son of Joseph and Lucile (Stuckey) Price on October 27, 1917 in Unionville, Iowa. He was a graduate of Udell High School in Udell, Iowa and Centerville Community College in Centerville, Iowa; He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska. He entered military service with the United States Air Force on June 10, 1941 and was released at the conclusion of WWII in March 1946. On March 3, 1946, Herb was united in marriage to Kathleen V. Stevens in Leavenworth, Kansas. He was later recalled into military service during the Korean conflict and remained in uniform until his retirement as a full colonel in December 1963. He received his commission from aviation cadets school on May 16th 1943. His officer training was at Scott Field. He served at bases in the following states; Georgia, Maine, California, Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, South Dakota, Montana and saw foreign service in RAF Canada, The Canal Zone in Panama and in Turkey in Europe. In October of 1956, Herbert assumed full command of the 740 A.C. &W. Squadron Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota. Upon his retirement, he returned to the family farm and started his second career in the cattle business. To his family and friends he was known to be a die-hard fan of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, the University of Iowa Hawkeyes, an avid golfer, and a strong supporter of the Republican Party.He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife, Kathleen Price on October 2, 1996; a son, Donald Price in 1982; his brothers, Harold Price and Harry Price; and a sister, Agnes Ford.Herbert is survived by: a daughter, Pam Lathrop and her husband, Joe Lathrop of Valley, Nebraska; his sons, Roger Price and his wife, Kay Price of St. Louis, Missouri, David Price and his wife, Shelly of Unionville, Iowa and James Price and fianc Michelle of Centerville, Iowa. He was very much loved by seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren; his sisters Annabelle Cochran of Florida, Vera Young of Fairfield, Iowa, Jeannie Johnson of California as well as many nieces and nephews.Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 11:00 at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa with Rev. Carl Heien officiating. Burial with full military honors will be held at the Fairview Cemetery south of Unionville, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 27, 2009 from 1 pm till 8 pm at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa. The family will be present from 9 am till the time of services on Saturday at the funeral home.Memorials can be made to the American Legion and left at or mailed to the funeral home.
