Clifford E. Herndon's Obituary
Clifford E. Herndon, age 88 of Des Moines, Iowa died Friday, May 04, 2007 at the Bickford Cottage in Urbandale, Iowa.
Clifford was born December 10, 1918, the son of George and Ina Irene (Cox) Herndon in Tindall, Missouri. He graduated with the class of 1937 from the Centerville, High School. Clifford was united in marriage to Bonnie Bentzinger on May 30, 1939 in Centerville, she survives. The couple made their home in Centerville until moving to Nebraska City in 1950, in 1956 they moved to Creston, Iowa before returning to Centerville in 1964. Clifford was employed with Iowa Southern Utilities, retiring in 1985 as a sales manager. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, photography, cooking, and refinishing furniture. Clifford loved taking picnics and especially loved being near his grandchildren. Clifford was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Centerville where he had served as a Trustee and various other positions. He was a member of ""Trees Forever"" and was always interested and active in the betterment of the Centerville Community.
Clifford is survived by his wife Bonnie Herndon of Urbandale, Iowa; two daughters, Portia (Jerry) L. Reed of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Betsy (Michael) Grove of Grimes, Iowa; a son Daniel (Cynthia) Herndon of Waterloo, Iowa; a brother Dr. Donald Herndon of Reno, Nevada; three sister-in-laws, Ann Ireland of Centerville, Iowa, Francis Herndon of Corydon, Iowa, and Rose Herndon of Eureka, California; twelve grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Clifford was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Zona Duncan; and three brothers, Richard, Russell, and George Herndon; and a grandson, Matthew Christian Herndon.
Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Thursday, May 10, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church in Centerville, Iowa with Pastor Dianne Christopher officiating. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 10-11 AM at the Methodist church. A burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery in Centerville. A memorial has been established to the First United Methodist Church in Centerville or the Bickford Cottage in Urbandale and may be left at or mailed to the Thomas Lange Funeral Home, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa 52544.
