Dean Butler's Obituary
Clifford "Dean" Eudean Butler, age 84, of Centerville, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at the Homestead of Centerville under the care of EveryStep Hospice, surrounded by the love of his family.
Dean was born on December 9, 1941, in Seymour, Iowa, to Clifford Harry Butler and Ruby Ada (Sharp) Butler. He graduated from Seymour High School and went on to further his education at Palmer Jr. College, Graceland University, and Buena Vista University, eventually earning his certification as a Certified Public Accountant. Through dedication and hard work, Dean built a respected career and later owned and operated his own CPA business in Centerville for many years, helping countless individuals and families with their financial needs.
On October 29, 1960, Dean was united in marriage to Margaret Ann Abbott in Seymour, Iowa. Their marriage was blessed with five children, Victoria, Deana, Teddy, Tammy, and Timothy. Dean's work took the family to many places over the years, including Seymour, Centerville, Albia, Jerome, Davenport, Waterloo, Chicago, Illinois, Fort Madison, Rock Island, Illinois, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Monmouth, Illinois, and Unionville, Missouri. No matter where they lived, family always remained at the center of Dean's life.
Dean was active in both his profession and his community. He was a member of the Iowa CPA Association and the National Association of Tax Professionals. He also served his community through local government as a member of the Seymour City Council and was involved with the Chamber of Commerce. A man of strong convictions, Dean also took an active interest in politics.
Faith played an important role in Dean's life. He was a member of the Methodist Churches in Seymour and Albia before later becoming a member of Drake Avenue Christian Church, where he faithfully served as a Trustee and Deacon.
Above all else, Dean cherished time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He had a gentle spirit and a generous heart, always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Those who knew him will remember him as a kind and devoted family man whose quiet strength, faith, and compassion touched many lives.
Those left to honor Dean's memory are his children, Victoria (Tom) Cranston, Deana (Gordy) Edwards, Teddy (Sherry) Butler, and Tammy (Eric) Hendricks; grandsons, Josh (Shannon) Sinnott, Curtis Sinnott, Joey (Rachael) Kruzich, Teddy Butler, Michael (Emily) Butler, Nicholas "Boo" Jewett, Skylar (Amber) Randall; granddaughters, Makenzie (Chase) Exline, Mindy Butler, Taylor Ann Hendricks, Kimie Butler, Hannah Butler, Tayler Jewett (Fiancé Matt), Camille Hendricks, and Victorya (Tori) Butler; great grandchildren, Bryanna, Colton (fiancé Anna), Owen, Ryan, Ava, Autumn, Sinder, AysaLynn, Trevor, Ayla, Liam, Johnathan, Jayden, Ariya and Nyle; his siblings, Karen (Don) Hicks, Marilyn (Melvin) Exline, Margaret Green, Dennis Butler, Debbie (Randy) Lane, Clifford (Katie) Butler Jr., and Brian (Michelle) Butler; as well as several extended family members and friends.
Dean is preceded in death by his wife of over 60 years, Margaret Butler; his father, Clifford Harry Butler; his mother and step father, Ruby and Gene Leazer; his brother, Harry Butler; his brother, Terry Leazer in Vietnam; an infant miscarried child; his son, Timothy Dean Butler; his brother-in-law, Wes Green; and his sister-in-law, Tootie (Dean) Glascock.
Funeral Services for Dean will be held at 1:00PM, Saturday, March 14, 2026 at Thomas Funeral Home in Centerville. Burial will follow the service at Shriver Cemetery, near Harvard, Iowa. Visitation will take place Saturday, March 14, 2026 at Thomas Funeral Home in Centerville, with the family greeting friends from 11AM-1PM.
