Clarence Ashby's Obituary
Clarence Ashby, age 81 of Centerville, passed away, Friday, August 5, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Centerville.
He was born on May 13, 1935 in Centerville, Iowa, the son of Harley and Vivian (Fox) Ashby. Clarence graduated from Centerville High School in 1953. He was united in marriage to Mary Stolz in Unionville, Missouri on March 2, 1955 and to this union of marriage, four children were born, Eloise, Herbert Edward, Russell, and Lisa.
In 1958 Clarence went to work for the Southern Iowa Railroads. He eventually accepted a position with the Appanoose County Secondary Roads, a position he held for eight years. He then worked for Mott Construction for several years until its closing. Subsequently, Clarence became employed with Young Radiator in Centerville and worked there for twenty four years, retiring when the company shut its doors.
Clarence was an avid fan of both the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones. He was a long time President of the Rathbun Lake Area CB Club. Throughout the years, Clarence enjoyed numerous Bingo Fundraisers that the club organized. He loved socializing with people, especially his friends at the L & P Redemption Center on North Main St. in Centerville. Most importantly, Clarence loved his family, particularly his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Throughout the years he has often been a fixture at the grandkids extracurricular events, such as Moravia football games and wrestling meets. Furthermore, it was common to see Clarence out tailgating with others prior to the high school football games.
Left to honor his memory are his four children, Eloise Messamaker of Centerville, Iowa, Herbert Edward (Teresa) Ashby of Eldon, Iowa, Russell (Laura) Ashby of Centerville, Iowa, and Lisa (Paul) Baker of Centerville, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren; twenty six great grandchildren; a sister, Carol (Don) Millizer of Plano, Iowa; an uncle, Bill Fox of Davenport, Iowa; an aunt, Wilma Stolz of Des Moines, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Mary Ashby.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at Lange Funeral Home in Centerville, with Mark Waits officiating. Burial will follow at the Haines Cemetery north of Centerville. A visitation will take place on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at Lange Funeral Home in Centerville, with family present from 6-8PM. Memorials have been established to the Moravia Football and Wrestling Programs and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home, 1900 South 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa, 52544.
