Charlie C. McDaniel's Obituary
Charlie C. McDaniel, age 86 of Centerville, Iowa passed away Saturday, July 11, 2015 at the Golden Age Skilled Nursing and Rehab Center in Centerville.
He was born on the family farm in Wayne County, Iowa on August 23, 1928, the son of Theodore Wesley and Bessie B. (Coates) McDaniel. Charlie spent most of his youth growing up on the family farm. As a teenager, he held his first job at Piper's Grocery Store in Corydon, Iowa.
Charlie was drafted into the United States Army on February 26, 1951. He was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Private First Class on April 15, 1957.
He was first united in marriage to Mary Mumma in the late 1950s. Following her passing, he later married Carolyn Archer on May 27, 1998 in Centerville.
Charlie eventually began employment with John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa, working in the company's foundry. Through dedication and hard work, Charlie eventually worked on the assembly line at John Deere, assisting with tire production/replacement. In 1991, he retired from the corporation with over twenty five years of service.
Charlie loved listening to country-western music. His passion for traditional country music led him on repeated trips to Nashville, Tennessee to experience the Grand Ole Opry concerts. Moreover, Charlie simply loved to travel in general. He also enjoyed spending his free time fishing. Most importantly, Charlie loved his family, especially his two step daughters, Penny and Joyce.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn McDaniel of Centerville, Iowa; three step children, Penny Schwenke of Centerville, Iowa, Joyce (Steve) Kalberer of Garden City, Kansas, and William Schwenke; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; five siblings, Calvin (Wilda) McDaniel of Ankeny, Iowa, Dana Rodgers of Centerville, Iowa, Betty Ruff of Livingston, California, Rex (Nancy) McDaniel of Seymour, Iowa, and Flo (Dan) Vanskike of Centerville, Iowa; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Mary; four siblings, Ruby Stevens, Mary Sales, Martha Petrie, and Reva McDaniel; and a step daughter, Beverly Spinelli.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM, Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Pastor Carol Iammatteo-Code officiating. A visitation will begin one hour prior to the funeral on Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions have been established to the Lord's Appanoose County Cupboard and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.
