Charles E. Turner's Obituary
Charles Turner, age 75, of Centerville died at home Monday evening, August 31, 2009.
Charlie was born April 24, 1934, the son of Chester Earl and Mabel Faye (Powers) Turner in Harvey, Iowa. He graduated from Moulton High School in 1952. During high school he played basketball and baseball. Sports has been a very important part of his entire life and he was an avid fan of Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bulls. Charlie married Janet Swarts in May of 1953. They later divorced. Charlie worked as a Railroad Agent for Wabash, Norfolk & Western and Burlington Northern Railroads for 30 years. After his railroad career, Charlie worked several jobs as a restaurant owner and operator, Insurance Agent, Newspaper Editor for Moulton Tribune, Electrolux Salesman and maintenance at Rathbun Fish Hatchery. He enjoyed spending time with his family and companion Jean Montegna. He was always the chief cook and bottle washer by choice. Charlie was an avid photographer and gardener and had a great sense of humor. In his retirement years he and Jean enjoyed traveling, dancing and helping less fortunate people get to the store, doctor appointments or whatever their needs may have been. Charlie was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Centerville, Iowa.
Charlie is survived by seven children, Denise Pauls of Fremont, IA, Sheryl (Garry) Eakins of Elkhart, IN, Donna Hall of Lansing, MI, Mike (Susan) Turner of Bloomfield, IA, Lori Turner of Fremont, IA, David (Joella) Turner of Ottumwa, IA, Kristin (Larry) Wolf of Mt. Pleasant, IA; a long time companion, Jean Montegna of Centerville, IA; twelve grandchildren; five step grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one step great grandchild; a sister, Betty Tadlock of LaPorte, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Georgia Orth and Jack Etter; step siblings, Butch and Don Etter; son-in-law, Tom Hall; and step-father, George Etter.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM, Friday, September 4, 2009 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Centerville, Iowa with Pastor Kathy Franzenburg officiating. A visitation will be Thursday at the Lange Funeral Home in Centerville with family present from 6-8 PM. A memorial has been established to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church Building Fund or Hospice of Central Iowa and may be left at or mailed to the Lange Funeral Home 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa 52544.
