Charles "Richard" Smith's Obituary
Charles Richard "Smitty" Smith departed his life on this earth at 12:05 June 29, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Richard "Smitty" was born April 29, 1928 to Jobie and Rosetta (Papach) Smith in Mystic, Iowa. He attended Mystic Schools and also worked for his father on the farm and mine. He served his country in the Army in World War 2 in Japan from May 1946 - 1947. He was united in marriage to June Irene Bills on December 31, 1957 in Kansas City, Kansas. Smitty was a member of the Centerville fire department and was a police officer in Centerville for a short time. He also was a member of the Byron/Stillman Valley, Illinois Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Districts and taught CPR until 2010. He worked for General Telephone Company in Byron, Illinois and retired from there in 1990 and was a school bus driver for Byron Community School District until 2008. He also volunteered with Appanoose Community Care Services as a Respite volunteer. He was currently serving a term on the Centerville City Council.He enjoyed many things but most of all spending time with family and friends, camping and going to family functions and his children and grandchildren's activities. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Irene, Son in law Jerry Barton, brother in laws' Earl Jared and Richard Repp and Herbert Thomas. Smitty is survived by his Children: Connie Barton of Williamsburg Iowa, Janis (Jerry) Larson, San Antonio Texas, Jodi Smith Centerville, Todd (Katherine) Smith, Scottsdale Arizona. Grandchildren Jeff (Brenda) Barton, Ottumwa Iowa, Jon(Dena) Barton, Appleton, Wisconsin, Jane (Doug) Davis, Williamsburg, Iowa, Jerry (Shelli) Barton, Ottumwa Iowa, Jennifer (Greg Bauman) Larson, San Antonio, Texas, Josh (Lindsay) Larson, San Antonio, Texas, Cheyene (Smith) Druien Centerville, Step grandchildren Matthew and Caitlyn Kellogg (Smith) Scottsdale, Arizona and special "grand children" Stephanie, the late Michael, Matthew, and Sarah Fletcher of Byron, Illinois and Many Nieces and Nephews. Siblings Charlotte (Earl) Jared, Kansas City Kansas, Edward (Rose Ann) Smith, Neal (Etta) Smith, Donna belle (Richard) Repp all of Mystic, Iowa. A sister in law Lois (Herb) Thomas, Mystic Iowa. Funeral service will be 10 am, Friday, July 3, 2015 at the Grace Tabernacle Baptist Church Centerville, with Pastor Adam Stanley officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at the Highland Cemetery, Mystic Iowa. Visitation will be from 2 pm - 8 pm with family present from 4 pm-7 pm on Thursday, July 2, 2015 at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville, Iowa.Memorials may be made to the family or The Alzheimer's Association of Greater Iowa or the Mystic Community Center for the Veteran's Memorial Wall at the center and left or mailed to the funeral home.
