Charles Overton's Obituary
CHARLES CLEVE OVERTON Charles Cleve Overton, son of Anna (Leitze) and (John) Cleve Overton, was born on December 29, 1926 in Jacksonville, Illinois and passed away into eternal life on March 31, 2010 at the age of 83. Charles devoted his life to his family, his friends and his faith. Known fondly as Charlie, he adored and believed in his children and grandchildren, celebrating every thing they did or told him about. He was a warm and generous man who never met a stranger and always had a story to tell that would bring a smile. His life was dedicated to service in his family, church and community. Charles served his country in WWII in the Army, leaving home at the age of 18 as a private and returning as a Buck Sergeant after completing his tour of duty. He opted to leave the Army after his father's untimely death to answer the nation's need for American farmers to serve their country by producing crops and foods. He was introduced to Phyllis by mutual friends on a blind date and they were married July 16, 1948, making their first home in White Hall, Illinois, where he became a talented mechanic. In 1959 Charles and Phyllis moved their family to Allerton, Iowa to pursue their dream of being independent farm owners. He & Phyllis were active in the farming community for many years, where he built a business with Super Crost Hybrid seeds and later, became a dealer of guns and ammunition. He shared his love for safe and responsible gun handling, hunting and marksmanship by teaching a gun safety class for many years. Charles served his community on the Wayne County Board of Supervisors and the Allerton City Council. His love for making people happy and eating great food helped him learn to cook after he retired. His famous fish fries, Sunday morning pancakes and breakfasts were enjoyed by and will be missed by many. An avid fisherman and teller of great fish tales, he was dreaming and saving for another fishing trip to Canada this summer with friends and family. Throughout his life, Charles contributed to his church and acted upon his faith, where he served as a Deacon, song leader, teacher and devoted member of Southern Baptist churches in Illinois, Iowa and Missouri. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Paul Dean Overton, his brother-in-law Kenneth Meyer and sister-in-law Reta Gerlach. Charles is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Phyllis Ann (Meyer) Overton, daughter Kay (Overton) Broschat of St. Louis, MO and son Paul Overton and his wife Deanna of Ames; grandchildren Rachel, Jacob, Ryan and Jordyn Overton; brother-in-law Ray and Linda Meyer of Fall River Kansas, niece Lisa (Shane) Schweda and nephews Jeff (Shelli), Randy, and Bill (Dawn) Overton.
