Carol Catherine Clayton's Obituary
Carol Catherine (Barck) Clayton, 90 of Corydon passed away Monday, July 20, 2015 at her home. Carol was born on October 27, 1924 in Crivitz, Wisconsin to Harry & Pauline (Hekel) Barck. On September 6, 1951 Carol was united in marriage to David E Clayton. To this union a son Matthew David was born. Carol grew up on farms in the Waterloo and Cedar Falls area during the depression era, where she attended rural school. After high school Carol attended Iowa State Teachers College and later attended the University of Colorado. She taught business classes in several different schools and colleges. After her and David were married and David was attending the University of Iowa, Carol worked in the Registrar's Office at the University and taught a college shorthand class. In August of 1952 they returned to Corydon where David joined the family business and became a plumbing and heating contractor. Carol helped David in the business as a bookkeeper and any other duties as needed. After their son Matt graduated from the University of Iowa he joined his parents in running the family business. Carol was a member of the Corydon United Methodist Church and served on various boards and committees for more than 50 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, Joanna Circle, Corydon American Legion Auxiliary, P.E.O. Sisterhood, board of trustees and treasurer for the LeCompte Memorial Library, member of the B.P.W. Club where she served as president and was also the treasurer for the committee that established the first ambulance service in Corydon. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, her husband David of 58 years, her sister Frances Brunskill, her brother Philip Barck, brother-in-laws Howard Brunskill and John Jennings, and sister-in-laws Mary Clayton Porter and Dorothy Clayton Pohl. Carol is survived by her son Matt (Lisa) Clayton of Corydon, sister-in-law Jeanne Barck, Espanola, New Mexico, step grandchildren Bo (Heather) Carpenter, Bondurant, Heidi (Brandon) Trower, Corydon, Mindy Carpenter (friend Justin), Corydon, great grandchildren Payton Carpenter, Allissi and Owen Trower, Taigen and Trent Hefner, and several nieces and nephews and their families. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 25, 2015 at Thomas-Randolph Funeral Home in Corydon with Pastor Buckhahn and Pastor Diane Schroeder officiating. Interment will be immediately following in Corydon Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and will continue until time of service. Memorials may be given to the Corydon United Methodist Church, the LeCompte Memorial Library, the Prairie Trails Aquatic Center or to Hospice of Central Iowa.
