Bonnie Vinzant's Obituary
Bonnie Jean (Samson) Vinzant passed away on March 1, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center Long Term Care in Centerville. Bonnie married William "Bill" Vinzant on May 20, 1951 and to this union, five children were born. Bonnie was born on November 24, 1930 in Brookfield, Missouri to Frederick and Gladys (Burris) Samson. She and her parents moved to Cincinnati, Iowa and then to Centerville where her father worked on the railroad. She graduated from Centerville High School. Bonnie was a self-described "city" girl but marrying a farmer, she soon adapted to farm life. She loved to cook and her homemade bread and noodles were a specialty. She wrote a cookbook out by hand with all of her recipes for her children to enjoy and they still use it to this day. An article was written about her in the Iowegian where she shared favorite recipes. Bonnie passed along her love for music and reading to her children. As a girl, she worked at Drake Public Library in Centerville. She made it a habit for her children to go to the library and pick up books for the week. Bonnie played the piano beautifully. She was the pianist for several churches in Centerville and also for the Eastern Star in Mystic where she and her husband were members. Bonnie was an Eastern Star member for 50 years and was also a member of the Ensemble Club in Centerville. There was always music and all the kids could play an instrument. In her spare time, she would knit, crochet and embroider. She liked to watch basketball on TV. The Iowa State Cyclones and the Chicago Bulls were her favorites. Bonnie would say her greatest accomplishment was raising five children. She was an only child and her kids would often tease her that she must be overwhelmed with all of them. Those left to cherish her memory are daughters: Margaret (Duffy) Kester, Jan Vinzant, Mary (Lloyd) Davis; sons: David (Sandy) Vinzant and John (Stacy) Vinzant; grandchildren: Michael (Maria) Vinzant, Kate (Patrick) Coil, Jackson Vinzant and Evelyn Vinzant and great grandchildren: Ethan Vinzant and Erin Coil. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, William. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at First United Methodist Church in Centerville. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 5, 2018 at Thomas Funeral Home in Centerville.
