Beverly Buchanan's Obituary
Beverly Buchanan, age 87 of Centerville, Iowa died Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at the Continental Care Center in Seymour, Iowa.
She was born June 19, 1924 to Harry and Alice (O'Banion) Carstens. Bev graduated from Maryville High School in Maryville, Missouri with the class of 1942. After graduation, she lived in Ventura and Los Angeles, California. Bev moved to Centerville in 1945 to help her parents in their hardware store, Martie Hardware.
Bev married Beryl ""Red"" Buchanan on October 9, 1949. Together they owned and operated Modern Jewelers until 1963.
They had two children, Barry and Barbara. Bev enjoyed being very active in her chosen activities, being a den mother for Cub Scouts, Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, on the Rainbow for Girls Board-where she earned The Grand Cross of Colors, and was active in CHS Band Mothers and chaperone for Top sixteen Cadets. Bev was a fifty year plus member of Centerville Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star where she was a Past Matron, Grand Representative and state district instructor. She was a long time member of Mercy Medical Center Auxiliary where she worked with the Ceramics Group. Bev enjoyed very much her time volunteering at the 18-80 Club.
Bev managed Montgomery Ward, worked at Tots to Teens, Iowa Trust & Savings Bank, for the Iowa State Board of Health as office manager for Southern Iowa Family Planning, and at Kortlin Jewelry.
She is survived by a son, Barry (Carol) Buchanan of Ottumwa, Iowa, a daughter Barbara (John) Riddick of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; six grandchildren, Tim (Jill) Riddick of Keller, Texas, Troy (Kristy) Riddick of Kokomo, Indiana, Brian Buchanan of Davenport, Iowa, Nicholas (Amber) Buchanan of Grinnell, Iowa, Heather Buchanan of Donahue, Iowa, Angela Buchanan of Ottumwa, Iowa, and a special grand-daughter, Tammy (Robbie) Buchanan-Davis of Eddyville, Iowa; twenty great-grandchildren; a brother, Edwin (Evelyn) Carstens of Columbia, Missouri; two sisters, Theresa Vidas, and Peggy (Bill) Summa of Lake Worth, Florida; and a sister in law Bonnie (Andy) Anderson of Bella Vista, Arkansas.
Bev was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Red Buchanan on April 2, 2002; and a grandson, Master SGT (USMC) Travis Riddick.
The greatest joys of her life were her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed the thirty years she spent traveling with her husband Red to antique gas engine shows, swap meets, and auctions.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Friday, March 30, 2012 at Lange Funeral Home in Centerville with Pastor Kay Singley officiating. Burial will follow in the Hanes Cemetery, north of Centerville. A visitation will be held Thursday at Lange Funeral Home with the family present from 5-7 PM. Memorials have been established to either the Cincinnati Christian Church or Mercy Hospice and may be given to Lange Funeral Home, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.
