Betty Carpenter's Obituary
Betty Juanita Carpenter, 83, of Corydon was born August 31, 1937 at home on the family farm in Wayne County to Roy & Wanda (Hellyer) Horner. Betty went to join her husband, Jim, and meet her Lord and Savior, Sunday, November 15th, 2020, at the Wayne County Hospital with the love and support of her family. Betty grew up on the farm where she was born. She graduated from Corydon High School in 1955. In 1957, she married her high school sweetheart, Jimmy Lynn Carpenter. To this union, five children were born: Sandra Lynne, Brenda Lee, Rebecca Sue, Douglas Jay, and Danny Joe. Betty and Jim lived in Ames, for a short time, until Jim graduated from ISU. Following graduation, they briefly lived in Des Moines before returning to Wayne County to operate the Guy Buttz farm. Betty and Jim semi-retired to Corydon after farming for thirty-nine years. They enjoyed ten more years together living in Corydon until Jim's death in 2012. Betty was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was affectionately known as "Grandma Betty" to a whole community that were touched by her open heart and kindness. Betty could be seen at any event involving her kids, grandkids or great grandkids. Many times attending multiple ballgames, Bible school programs, recitals, concerts, or fair shows in a single day. She was active in the Eden Garden Club, Hospital Auxiliary and enjoyed volunteering at the Hospital gift shop. Betty, Jim, and all five children were members of New Providence Baptist Church in Confidence where Betty served in many roles, especially during vacation Bible school. Betty placed huge value in her church family. Most of all, Betty lived her life as an example of what a Christian should be, and was a tireless servant of her Lord, Jesus Christ until the very end. "Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of His saints" - Psalm 116:15. True to her faith, when Betty found out that she was sick, she said, "Well, I don't know how I got it, but it will be what it is, if it's my time, it's my time". In her last days in the hospital, she said several things as a reminder of her faith including, "Trust and Obey" and "I'm ready to meet the Lord". Betty was preceded in death by her husband, parents, in-laws, Elmer & Anita Carpenter, two brothers-in-law, Franklin Gault and Fredrick 'Bud' Brown, and two sisters-in-law, Betty Brown and Jean Carpenter as well as great grandchild, Dallas Layne Rochholz.
