Bernita Nickel's Obituary
Bernita Jean Nickel Born 7-4-1925 Wayne County, Iowa Died 1-20-2011 Waverly, Nebraska Born to Leonard & Mabel Latimer. She was the oldest sibling of 4 girls. Married to Max E. Nickel on 5-1-1945. Four children were born to them: Craig E. Nickel, Roger L. Nickel, David A. Nickel, Mary Kay Nickel. Jean had 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Jean was raised in Corydon and also lived a short time in Brush, Colorado. She graduated from Corydon High school in 1943. Jean taught rural school for 2 years in a one room school house. After marrying Max, they ran a dairy farm outside of Humeston where the 3 boys were born. They then moved to Mingo, Iowa where Mary Kay was born. They moved to Ames Iowa in 1961. After Max retired they move back to Corydon. Jean was a farm wife and lead a very simple but busy life. She was very handy with her hands and made many of the family clothes. She did crafts such as quilts, needlepoint, and cross-stitch. She taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and was a 4-H leader for many years. She could be a little spitfire or as her son-in-law called her "fire cracker baby" as she had the whole United States celebrating her birthday with fireworks every Fourth of July. Her faith was very important to her and she tried to live by being an example to others. Later in life she became interested in genealogy and learned to trace a family's heritage by volunteering at the Wayne County genealogy Library. She traced both sides of the Latimer's and Nickel's which she truly enjoyed. She was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband Max and son Roger. She is survived by son Craig and his wife Jennifer of Louisa, Virginia, son David of Reno, Nevada, Daughter Mary Kay Bielenberg and husband Jeff of Lincoln, Nebraska, 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, Sister Margorie Gideon , Michigan ,Gwen Wooten, Colorado and Anne Hagan and husband Carl.
