Barbara Hawkins' Obituary
Barbara Ann Hawkins, 66 of Cincinnati passed away, Friday, August 14, 2020 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Barb was born in Centerville on December 31, 1953, to Marion & LaVina (Hartley) Stepnoski. Barb received her education from St. Mary's Catholic School and graduated from Centerville High School. On October 17, 1970, Barb was united in marriage to Carl Hawkins. To this union came four children: Scott, Stephen, Carla and Joseph. Barb stated as a little girl she wanted to be two things in life, a mom and a teacher. She accomplished the first by being a stay at home mother of four. She spent many hours with her husband watching their children participate in activities. In 1992, she returned to school to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher. She graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Graceland University. Barb began teaching full time in the fall of 1995 and continued her education to obtain her Master's degree in May of 2000. Eight years later, Barb was acknowledged for her hard work and dedication in teaching and was the recipient of the 2007-2008 Masonic Teacher of the Year. She retired from teaching in 2017. In retirement Barb enjoyed traveling with her husband, golfing, gardening, baking, crafting, seasonally decorating her home, shopping, spending time with her husband on the farm, and following her grandchildren through all of their endeavors. Barb was not only devoted to her family, but to many organizations in her community. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and played an active role within the church. She also enjoyed working with Operation Santa and the Hospital Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband Carl, children: Scott Hawkins (Tiffany), Stephen Hawkins (Melanie), Carla Underwood (Jim), Joseph Hawkins (Ashley), grandchildren: Zachary Hawkins (Megan), Brendyn Hawkins (Dani), Jakob Hawkins, Brady Hawkins, Colton Belloma, Hannah Hawkins, Pacey Hawkins, Avery Hawkins, Austyn Hawkins, Emery Hawkins, Casen Hawkins, three step-grandchildren: Gage, Brandt, and Bayleigh, great granddaughter, Everly Hawkins, sisters: Cathy Rheinberger (Michael), Deborah Halley (John), Bridget Morton (Jamey), mother-in-law, Colleen Hawkins and sister-in-law, Vicky Lawson (Dennis) and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Caden Underwood, parents, sister, Mary Lou Stepnoski and her father-in-law, Glen Hawkins. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 am, Tuesday, August 18, 2020 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Centerville with Fr. Timothy Armbruster officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Cincinnati. Visitation will take place Monday, August 17, 2020 at Thomas Funeral Home in Centerville with family present from 4:00 - 8:00 pm and a vigil service will be held at 7:30 pm.
