Audrey Mace Lucas' Obituary
Audrey Mace Lucas was born on March 4, 1942, on her parent's, Marvin and Floriene (Cobb) Mace's, farm in Wayne County, Iowa. She succumbed to injuries sustained in a farm-related accident while conducting cattle chores on Saturday, January 9, 2016, on her and Don's Wayne County farm. Interment will be in Sharon Cemetery overlooking the family farm. Audrey can be remembered as decisive even as a young girl. Especially when as a six-year old girl when she declared on the school bus her love for and future aspirations to be the wife of Donald Lucas who was in 8th grade at the time. Don promptly began riding his horse to school. As fate would have it, Audrey and Don were united in marriage on May 29, 1960. Their marriage resulted in four children, twelve grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Audrey was a loving person who never met a stranger, especially children. As a cook at the Wayne Community School District, Audrey was known as the "Cookie Lady", as she continually provided students with extra cookies "out the back-door" of the kitchen. To this date, many young adults that attended school during her tenure as a cook may not remember her name, but they sure remembered the extra cookies she gave them. As a mother and grandmother, Audrey was known for her cooking and baking, which yes, included cookies. She was willing to bake cookies to order with little, if any, advanced notice. Her family considered her the "MacGyver" of the kitchen because she could feed a party of ten with a stick of butter, half of a potato, and a frying pan. Everyone would have plenty of food, but she worried that she did not make enough. Audrey is survived by her mother, Floriene of Corydon; husband, Don of Corydon; children Cheryl Roland and fiance Jerry Holmes of Knoxville, Iowa; Jean Umbenhower of Chariton, Iowa; Larry (Toni) Lucas of Phoenix, Arizona; and Terri (Tom) Nance of Chariton, Iowa. Siblings include Carrol Mace (Jan Donald) of Audubon, Iowa; Carmen (Bill) Anderson of Pella, Iowa; Dale Mace (Sharon Crouch) of Casa Grande, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews. Audrey's legacy includes 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Audrey is preceded in death by her father, Marvin, and her grandparents. Since the time of her passing and the writing of this obituary, five baby calves have been born on the Lucas farm - - continuing the circle of LIFE.
